Volleyball Suffers Five-Set Loss To Ferris State

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (13-9 overall, 7-4 GLIAC) won the first and third sets against visiting Ferris State (17-5 overall, 10-1 GLIAC) but the Bulldogs recorded a 15-10 victory in the decisive fifth set.

There were four ties (all in the first eight points of the set) and two lead changes in the first set, before WSU went on a 9-2 run to open a 13-6 lead.  Ferris answered with a 9-5 spurt to pull within three at 18-15, then made it a two-point difference (22-20) before the Warriors earned the last three points.

The second set was tied at 1-1 and 8-8, after which the Bulldogs garnered the next four points.  Wayne State was only able to get within two points twice (12-10, 15-13) the rest of the set.

After the third set was tied at 4-4, WSU earned eight of the next 10 points for a 12-6 lead.  FSU never got closer than three points as Wayne State closed out the set on a 7-2 run.

Ferris State scored the first four points of the fourth set and the Warriors never were able to get on track hitting just .105 in the set.  WSU did manage four consecutive points to cut the deficit to 6-5, but the Bulldogs responded with the next three points.

In the deciding fifth set, the match was tied four times in the first 10 points, but Ferris State rattled off four straight points for a 9-5 lead and Wayne State was not able to get closer than three points the rest of the set.

Kristen Bulkiewicz () had a match-high 16 kills, with Madie Kent () adding a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs.

Ferris State totaled 14 blocks and Anne Sutton hit .375 with 10 kills and one error on 24 attacks.

The Warriors hit the road for the next three matches visiting Ohio Dominican on Oct. 26 (7 p.m.), Tiffin on Oct. 27 (2 p.m.) and Findlay on Oct. 30 (7:30 p.m.).
