DETROIT - The Wayne State University volleyball team (7-3, 2-0 GLIAC) ended its first home weekend without dropping a set, as the Warriors
defeated Ashland University (8-2, 1-1 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon (25-20, 25-22, 25-16), shutting the Eagles out for the first time since 2008.
Freshmen
Essence Jackson-Jones (Muskegon, Mich.) and
Kelsey Bonewits (Griffith, Ind.) led the Warriors up front, as each finished with seven kills and five blocks. Jackson-Jones hit .600 while Bonewits posted a .385 hitting percentage for the match.
Candice Ottey (Ajax, Ont.) also had seven kills, and
Madie Kent (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) chipped in five with 10 digs as the Warriors handed the Eagles just their second loss of the year.
While Wayne State led for the entirety of the first and third sets, the Warriors had to mount a significant comeback to take the middle set.
Down 22-18 late in the second, the Warriors took their first lead of the set and ended it on a seven-point run. The momentum carried over to the third when Wayne State jumped out to a 7-0 lead.
Cydney Biessel (Ruby, Mich./Yale) paced the offense with 26 assists and contributed three kills, three blocks and a pair of service aces.
Wayne State will continue its five-match homestand Tuesday at 7:00 against Findlay. It will be Beach Night at the Matthaei.
