Women's Tennis opens season with 7-2 GLIAC win

Freshmen Shine for Warriors.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State women's tennis team (1-0 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) started its season on the right foot by recording a 7-2 conference win over rival Ferris State (0-1, 0-1 GLIAC). The Warriors came out firing in sweeping the three doubles matches and carried that momentum into singles play as they disposed of the Bulldogs.

Coach Sheila Snyder guided the 2011-12 team to the most wins in school history (22) but lost Kristina Goranskaya (Thornhill, Ont. / Northview Heights Secondary School), the 2011 GLIAC Women's Tennis “Athlete of the Year,” to graduation.

The addition of three freshmen is tough for any young team and when you consider the fact that all three are from outside of the United States, one can understand why expectations for this team were kind of up in the air. The newcomers came up large however going unbeaten on the day.

Julia Kamenko (Thornhill, Ont. / Vaughan S.S.) was overwhelming at #2 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Tabitha Simpson and Alex Poissant (Laval, Que. / Vanier Prep) followed suit at #3 singles as she flustered Laurence LeBlanc en route to a 6-4, 6-2 win. Kamenko and Poissant also teamed up for an 8-4 win over LeBlanc and Julia Fusik at second doubles.

Rebeca Aguirre (Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico / Bachillerato Virtual Universidad de Guadalajara) rounded out the freshmen domination on Friday with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Fusik. Also picking up wins for the Warriors were Anne Li Briand (Repentigny, Que. / École Secondaire Félix-Leclerc) 6-3, 6-2 at fourth singles and again at first doubles (8-2) where she was paired with Yahsha Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield). Tanya Joseph (Northville, Mich. / Northville) and Jessica Kruczek (Detroit, Mich. / Lakeview) grabbed a hard fought 8-6 victory at No. 3 doubles for the Warriors as well.

This Wednesday the Warrior women will play host to perennial power Northwood in another GLIAC showdown at the WSU Tennis Courts.  The match against the Timberwolves begins at 2 p.m.
