GLIAC Release
AURORA, Ill. -- The Wayne State volleyball team (8-14) concluded play in the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover on Saturday evening. The Warriors dropped its first match of the day against Rockhurst (17-5) in straight sets. WSU closed out the event with a 3-1 loss against Bellarmine.
The two conferences tied with a 24 wins each but the GLVC won its fourth straight Crossover title based on a games won tiebreaker. The GLVC won 89 of the 173 sets played during the two-day event. The GLVC holds a 4-2 lead all-time in the event.
Match One - Rockhurst (L, 0-3)
Set one was close early and the two teams were tied at 7-7 following a kill from
Heather Weiss (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron). The Warriors would extend their lead to 10-8 after a
Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont. / Sandwich) kill. However, the Hawks would go on a 10-2 run to overtake WSU 18-12. The Warriors would pull within three late in the set but Rockhurst would hold on for the 25-21 victory.
WSU led 5-4 to begin the second set following a Bulkiewicz kill. Rockhurst would seize control and explode out to a 19-6 lead following a 14-2 run. The Hawks would close out the set with a 25-12 win.
The Green & Gold started quickly in the third set and led 6-3 after another kill from Bulkiewicz. Momentum swung back to the Hawks and Rockhurst led 13-9. The Warriors responded with an 8-1 run to take a 17-14 lead and forced RU to burn a timeout. WSU would collect only three more points as Rockhurst finished the set on an 11-3 run to complete the sweep.
Bulkiewicz finished with a match-high 14 kills and collected her 31st career double-double with 12 digs. while
Jessica DeLeeuw (Harrison Twp., Mich. / L'Anse Creuse) tallied another career-high with 29 assists. Also with double-digit digs were
Carlee Hunt (Waterford, Mich. / Walled Lake Northern) and
Hannah Williams (Plainwell, Mich. / Delton Kellogg (Kalamazoo Valley CC)).
Match Two - Bellarmine (L, 1-3)
Bellarmine led 7-4 to begin the first set. DeLeeuw brought the Warriors within four at 11-7 after a kill but the Knights would extend their lead to 15-9 on a Warrior attack error. Bellarmine ended the set on a 10-1 run to win 25-14.
WSU sprinted out to a 6-0 advantage to begin the second set, powered by strong serving from Weiss who posted two aces during the run. A 4-0 run would stretch WSU's lead to 11-4 before BU would cut the deficit to 11-9 after a 5-0 run of their own. The Warriors would go on a 7-0 run to take a commanding 25-13 lead before winning their first set of the tournament 25-13, closing the match out on another ace from Weiss.
Bellarmine led 8-3 to open the third set and would control the entire set. The Knights would collect the wire-to-wire victory, 25-17 to take a 2-1 match lead.
The fourth set was tightly contested to start and the two teams were tied at 5-5, 10-10 and 15-15. However, BU would go on a 7-0 run to take a 22-15 lead and forced WSU to take both of its timeouts. The Warriors would fight down the stretch but the Knights would be too much and would collect a 25-21 set victory and a 3-1 match win.
Bulkiewicz tallied 13 kills and eight digs. She now has 1,210 career kills and is seventh all-time in program history. Next up on the list is Rachel Rogers (1986-89) and Sandi Lane (1990-92) with 1,222 kills. Weiss posted 10 kills while DeLeeuw dished out 28 assists. Williams collected 12 digs.
The Green & Gold will return home for the next three matches beginning with Ohio Dominican on Friday at 7 PM.
