Painesville, Ohio -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team remained unbeaten in league play with a 68-48 triumph Saturday afternoon at Lake Erie College. With the win, the Warriors are 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the GLIAC, while the Storm fall to 5-4 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
WSU began the contest strong despite arriving late due to the weather conditions taking a 13-7 lead less than 4:30 into the match after a triple by junior center
Shareta Brown (Pontiac, Mich. / Grand Blanc). She had nine of WSU's first 13 points, while sophomore guard
Destiny Lavita-Stephens (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Goodrich) tallied the other four points on a pair of buckets.
Wayne State's largest lead of the opening half came at the 13:09 following a conventional three-point play by Brown increased the visitors lead to 18-10. LEC responded with eight consecutive points to knot the game which included a pair of three-pointers, one each by Daija Jones and Alyssa Brumbaugh.
The game was tied another five times before intermission (a total of nine ties in the first half). With the Storm holding a two-point advantage (32-30) late in the first half, the WSU defense held the hosts without a field goal for the final four minutes as LEC went 0-for-7.
Brown led all scorers with 12 points after the opening 20 minutes as WSU shot 44 percent (15-of-34) from the field compared to 46 percent (12-of-26) for Lake Erie, which trailed the Warriors 34-33 at the break.
LEC's Jackie Murray drained a three-pointer on the opening possession of the second half putting the hosts in front 36-34. The teams traded buckets over the next three minutes with the Warriors taking the lead for good ona three-pointer by junior
Ondrea Hughes (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Loy Norrix) which gave WSU a 40-38 lead at the 16:06 mark.
Hughes triple started a 10-0 WSU run pushing the Wayne State margin to nine (47-38). Lake Erie cut its deficit to six on a couple of occassions, the last coming at 49-43 with just under eight minutes remaining.
WSU closed out the contest on a 19-5 run as the Warrior defense limited the Storm to 2-of-10 from the field (1-2 FT) with seven turnovers over the final eight minutes.
Brown was the leading scorer with 20 points (7-11 FG, 1-2 3-PT, 5-8 FT), while recording five steals and eight rebounds. Lavita-Stephens had 13 points, with junior
Kayla Bridges (Canton, Mich.) adding 11 points and eight rebounds off the Warrior bench.
Senior
Imari Redfield (Detroit, Mich. / Country Day) grabbed a game-best 14 rebounds to go along with nine points. Wayne State recorded 19 steals in the contest as Lake Erie had 29 turnovers.
Hughes was credited with seven steals in the contes, the most by a Warrior since Jasmine McCall also had seven thefts vs. Ashland on Jan. 31, 2009 (McCall had eight at Saginaw Valley on Jan. 15, 2009).
Brumbaugh led LEC with nine points off the bench.
Wayne State will play three road games in four days next week starting with a Wednesday night contest at defending national champion Ashland.
