Decatur, Ala. -- The Wayne State University softball squad opened its 2013 campaign with a 7-1 setback to Truman State (1-0 overall) Friday morning in the opening round of the 2013 Charge Chillout hosted by the University of Alabama-Huntsville.

The Bulldogs scored twice in the top of the first off Warrior starter Briana Lee (Canton, Mich. / Salem) on a one-out walk, a fielder's choice and a two-run double to left center by senior first baseman Kristin Grossman.

WSU had a chance in the bottom of the first to get on the scoreboard as juinor outfielder Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) and freshman third baseman Jade McGarr (Guelph, Ont. / St. James Catholic) each had infield singles, but three consecutive outs ended the threat.

The game remained 2-0 until TSU tallied three times in the top of the fifth.  Two singles along with a fielder's choice plated the first run of the frame, then Grossman drove in the other two runs with a double to center.

From the second through fifth innings, Wayne State had just xx base runners as McGarr was hit by a pitch with two outs in the third, freshman Lyndsay Butler (Cambridge, Ont. / Centennial C.V.I.) and senior outfielder Stephanie Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) had back-to-back singles starting the fourth and McGarr walked with two outs in the fifth.

Truman increased its lead to 7-0 in the sixth on a two-run single by centerfielder Laura Miller off Warrior reliever Mackenzie Boehler (Saginaw, Mich. / Swan Valley).

Wayne State forced the seventh inning with a run in the bottom of the sixth.  Foreman singled with one out and scored on a double to right center by sophomore catcher Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams).

TSU had an 11-6 advantage in hits with Foreman leading the Warriors with a 2-for-3 effort.  McGarr reached base three times on a single, a walk and a hit by pitch.

Lee (0-1) allowed five earned runs on eight hits in four-plus innings, while Boehler surrendered two runs on three hits in three innings in the circle.

Today's match-up with the Bulldogs was the third time in the last six years the squads have met at the Charger Chillout and the first loss for WSU (Warriors won 1-0 on 2/23/2007 and 8-2 on 2/19/2011).

Wayne State wraps-up day one action with a 2 p.m. (Eastern) game vs. in-region rival Southern Indiana.
