Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. - The Wayne State University men's tennis team (7-4, 4-0 GLIAC) remained unbeaten in league play with a tight 5-4 victory at Lake Superior State University (5-12, 3-4 GLIAC). The Warriors would have to battle from behind to remain unbeaten but pulled things out in the end.
LSSU grabbed the early lead 2-1 after doubles play as they took the first and third flights.
Melvin Joseph (Northville, Mich. / Northville) and
Michael FitzGerald (Grosse Ile, Mich. / Grosse Ile) earned the lone WSU doubles point with their 8-6 win in the number two spot.
Lake Superior would also take the top two singles matches from the Warriors and it became clear that this match was going to come down to the very end.
Thomas Ducret (Paris, France) earned a 6-3, 6-4 win in third singles to go along with straight set wins by FitzGerald and
Jason Chen (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) at fifth and sixth singles respectively.
Melvin Joseph again would come up big for WSU as his match in the fourth flight. After dropping the first set 1-6 he would come roaring back in the second 6-2 to even the match. The third and deciding set was just as tight as Joseph found a way to earn a 7-5 victory giving the Warriors the league win.
Up next for the Green and Gold is another road test in the GLIAC with Michigan Tech (12-6 3-3 GLIAC) at 10:00 am on Saturday.
