Canton, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team improved to 11-5 overall and 8-1 in the GLIAC with an 8-1 triumph Saturday afternoon at Walsh University (5-13 overall, 1-9 GLIAC). WSU has won four straight league matches and needs one win in its final two matches to finish no worse than tied for second in the final conference standings. Northwood leads at 9-0 while Ferris State is percentage points behind the Warriors at 9-2.
Wayne State will play at Malone University on Sunday morning before traveling to Northwood for the regular-season finale match on Tuesday. Should WSU win tomorrow against the Pioneers and the Timberwolves defeat Lake Erie, Tuesday's match would be for the GLIAC regular-season title.
The Warriors took a 3-0 lead over the Cavaliers on Saturday after winning all three doubles flights.
Aman Gill (Windsor, Ont. / Assumption College HS) and
Trey Keating (Troy, Mich.) combined for a 9-7 win at first doubles, while
Melvin Joseph (Northville, Mich.) and
Michael FitzGerald (Grosse Ile, Mich.) recorded an 8-3 triumph at No. 2 doubles.
Jason Chen (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) and
Thomas Ducret (Paris, France) completed the sweep with a 8-5 victory at third doubles.
Gill suffered a straight set defeat at first singles, but Ducret won at the second singles flight.
Mohamed Fazyl Kechai (Paris, France / Martin Luther King) was a straight set winner at third singles, with Joseph winning 1 & 2 at No. 4 singles. FitzGerald (at fifth singles) and Chen (at sixth singles) were also straight set victors.
