DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team improved to 15-1 in the GLIAC on Thursday with an 89-72 victory over Northwood at the Matthaei Center. The Warriors avenged their only conference loss this season in the victory over the Timberwolves and shot 52.5 percent from the field.
It was also Wayne State's seventh straight win and 17th in the last 18 contests.
Wayne State, the No. 18-ranked team in the most recent Top 25 coaches poll, improved to 18-2 overall and has won 17 straight games at home. Northwood falls to 10-10 overall and 8-8 in the GLIAC.
Junior center
Shareta Brown (Pontiac, Mich. / Grand Blanc) had her 12th double-double of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Senior
Imari Redfield (Detroit, Mich. / Country Day) also notched a double-double with 17 points and 11 boards. Junior
Ashley Wilson (Portage, Mich. / Northern) scored a season-high 14 points off the bench for the Warriors, while junior
Jackie Jones (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) turned in a season-best 10 assists.
WSU jumped out to a 29-16 lead in the first 10 minutes of the first half over Northwood. The Timberwolves pulled to within seven points, 31-24, with 7:17 left in the first half. Wilson converted on a lay-up, her first points of the game, before freshman
Rachel Ruzevich (Orland Park, Ill. / Carl Sandburg) knocked down a three-pointer from the corner as WSU again had a double-digit advantage in the first half, 36-26.
Wayne State would lead by as much as 18 points in the first half, as the Warriors went on a 9-0 run to build a 45-27 advantage with 3:14 left before halftime. WSU led at the break, 47-34, shooting 55.6 percent in the opening 20 minutes and sinking 15-of-18 free throw shots.
Northwood wouldn't get closer than 10 points for the rest of the contest. After NU pulled to within 10 points, 61-51, with 10:54 left in the game, Wayne State went on a 14-2 run to build a 75-53 lead. With just over six minutes left on the clock after the run, the game was out of reach for the visiting Timberwolves.
Brown scored five points during the run, with Wilson adding four points of her own.
Wayne State pulled down 54 rebounds, a new season high for the Warriors. Northwood had 34 rebounds. WSU also had advantages in assists (17-8), points in the paint (42-28), bench points (38-16) and fast break points (8-4). WSU made 21-of-30 free throw attempts, while Northwood was 17-of-24 from the foul line.

Kayla Bridges (Canton, Mich.) added nine points in 11 minutes off the bench. Junior
Ondrea Hughes (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Loy Norrix) also had six points and five boards for WSU. Along with Wilson's season-high 14 points, she added seven rebounds and three blocks. She knocked down 6-of-7 shots.
Wayne State wore pink uniforms for the contest in support of Breast Cancer Awareness.
The Warriors return to the hardcourt Saturday for a 1 p.m. tip against Saginaw Valley. WSU was a 94-74 winner over the Cardinals earlier this season.
