TIFFIN, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team earned multiple victories in both doubles and singles Friday to earn a 6-3 GLIAC-opening victory at Tiffin University. The Warriors improved to 2-5 overall (1-0 GLIAC).
WSU handed the Dragons (10-7, 3-1 GLIAC), the No. 4-ranked team in the Midwest region, their first league loss of the season.
Wayne State opened the match with two victories in doubles to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles play. The No. 1 doubles team of senior
Melvin Joseph (Northville, Mich. / Northville) and
Trey Keating (Troy, Mich. / Troy) won 8-4. Joseph and Keating improved to 3-1 when playing at the top flight in doubles.
At the third flight in doubles, freshman
Stephane Robineau (Paris, France) and sophomore
Mohamed Fazyl Kechai (Paris, France / Martin Luther King) earned an 8-5 win.
In singles, Wayne State took four of the six flights to clinch the match.
Freshman
Clement Charriere (Marseille, France) earned a three-set victory at No. 2 singles. Charriere lost a second-set tiebreaker, but earned a 6-2, 6-7, 6-0 win over Tiffin's Robbie Ball. He improved to 5-2 at No. 2 singles this season.
At the third flight in singles, senior
Michael FitzGerald (Grosse Ile, Mich. / Grosse Ile) dropped just three games on his way to a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
Joseph and Keating also won in straight sets at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Joseph earned a 7-6, 6-3, while Keating tallied a 6-4, 6-4 victory for WSU.
The Warriors return to the tennis courts Saturday for a noon match at the University of Findlay.
