TAMPA, Fla. -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team opened its Florida trip on Thursday, playing the first of four matches in a five-day stretch. The Warriors picked up one victory in both singles and doubles, falling to Chestnut Hill College, 7-2.
With the loss, WSU falls to 0-3 on the season. Chestnut Hill, the No. 3-ranked team in the ITA East Regional rankings, improved to 6-3.
Freshman
Clement Charriere (Marseille, France) won his second straight match in singles, earning a 6-2, 6-0 victory at the second flight over Chestnut Hill's Michael Humes.
Wayne State picked up its other victory at the No. 3 doubles position as the duo of sophomore
Mohamed Fazyl Kechai (Paris, France / Martin Luther King) and freshman
Stephane Robineau (Paris, France) won 8-4. The victory was also the second straight for the doubles pair.
At the top flight in singles, Robineau split sets, winning the second set 7-5. He dropped a third-set super tiebreaker, as Chestnut Hill's Mariano Porter won 6-3, 5-7, 10-5.
All of the doubles matches were close. Wayne State's top squad of Charriere and senior
Michael FitzGerald (Grosse Ile, Mich. / Grosse Ile) fell 8-5, while WSU's No 2 doubles pair of senior
Melvin Joseph (Northville, Mich. / Northville) and junior
Trey Keating (Troy, Mich. / Troy) lost 8-6.
The Warriors face Saint Leo University on Friday.
