Box Score (HTML) Game 2DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball squad (35-9 overall, 15-5 GLIAC) extended its winning streak to 10 games by sweeping visiting Lake Superior State University (6-24 overall, 5-19 GLIAC) on Senior Day Saturday at the WSU Softball Stadium. WSU won the opener 2-0 and took the nightcap 12-5.
Game 1After the Warriors had stranded six base runners in the first five innings including at least one in innings two through four, senior
Amanda Burnard (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth) came through with a clutch hit in the bottom of the sixth. The first two batters were retired, but
Jade McGarr (Guelph, Ont. / St. James Catholic) had a bunt single and the subsequent throwing error by the Laker catcher allowed McGarr to advance all the way to third base. On the first pitch, Burnard laced a single up the middle scoring McGarr with the game's first run. Pinch-runner
Catherine Rayos (Warren, Mich. / Mott) stole second and scored on a single to right by pinch-hitter
Ali Lince (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview).
WSU hurler
Lyndsay Butler (Cambridge, Ont. / Centennial C.V.I.) worked around the first batter reaching on an error with a pair of strikeouts sandwiched around a pop up.
Butler (17-4) struck out 11 and walked just one while allowing three hits in the 26 batters she faced. She lowered her ERA to a GLIAC-leading 0.69, while notching her 11th shutout of the season (she also shared a shutout earlier in the campaign). Butler's 213 strikeouts this season ranks fifth in school history behind Molly Yetman's marks of 300 and 265 in 2007 and 2008, respectively, and Casey Hanes' totals of 366 and 283 in 2010 and 2009, respectively.
LSSU's Brandi Anderson (4-10) was tagged with the loss allowing two earned runs on 10 hits in six innings with one strikeout and no walks.
McGarr went 3-for-3 in the contest, while
Devin Hentschel (Wyoming, Mich. / Rogers) had two singles.
Game 2The Warriors pounded out 16 hits and overcame an early 4-2 deficit for the victory.
WSU scored twice in the top of the first as
Emily Cava (Oakville, Ont. / Cardinal Leger S.S.) and
Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) each singled. Cava scored on a LSSU throwing error on White's bunt single, while Butler's RBI groundout plated White.
The Lakers responded with four runs in the bottom of the first as one run scored on a wild pitch and Allison Traczyk smacked a three-run home run.
Wayne State regained the lead good with a four-run third. Cava again had a leadoff single and White followed with another bunt single. After two consecutive fielder's choices,
Julie Ingratta (Markham, Ont. / St. Thomas of Villanova College) had an RBI single scoring White to make it 4-3. An infield hit by McGarr loaded the bases before Burnard drilled a two-run single to right giving WSU a 5-4 advantage. Following an LSSU pitching change, WSU's starting pitcher
Briana Lee (Canton, Mich. / Salem) singled to left center scoring McGarr.
The Warriors put another four spot on the scoreboard in the fourth with Cava starting things off with a double. White's sacrifice bunt moved Cava to third and she scored on Butler's base hit. As the second out (strikeout) was being recorded Butler stole second and scored on Ingratta's double. McGarr followed with a triple and scored on another single by Burnard.
Traczyk had a leadoff home run in the fourth to make it 10-5 before WSU tacked on two more runs in the seventh. Burnard walked, Lee singled and
Shannon Hilton (Gilford, Ont. / Bradford) advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. After a pop out, White tripled to left center to complete the scoring.
Lee improved to 17-2 with the win as she allowed five earned runs on five hits in six innings of work with 10 strikeouts and four walks.
Mackenzie Boehler (Saginaw, Mich. / Swan Valley) pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning.
Anderson (4-11) was tagged with the loss after surrendering six runs (five earned) on seven hits in 2.2 innings. Alyssa Boucher allowed four earned runs on six hits in 1.1 before Jade Stein gave up two earned runs in her three innings of work.
Cava and White each had three hits and scored twice, while Butler, Ingratta, McGarr, Burnard and Lee all had two hits apiece.
