Volleyball Splits Final Day at Crossover

AURORA, Ill. -- The Wayne State University volleyball team concluded play at the Mizuno Midwest Regional Crossover on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors dropped the morning contest against Southern Indiana (13-7) 3-1 before sweeping St. Joseph's (5-14) in the second match of the day to give Tim Koth his 300th win as a women's head coach.

The eighth annual Mizuno Midwest Region Volleyball Crossover is the nation's largest collegiate volleyball tournament, Mizuno will be the title sponsor for the regional volleyball event which will pit 16 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) volleyball teams against 16 institutions representing the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) including four programs from the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC).

The GLIAC went 20-18 in the two-day event compared to a 23-16 GLVC and 1-10 GMAC record.

Sophomore Hannah Moore (Louisville, Ky/ Assumption) led Wayne State with 54 kills (4.91/set) during three Crossover matches on her way to being named to the All-Tournament Team. She collected her second career 20-kill match in a 3-0 win over St. Joseph's on Saturday. Moore now ranks third in kills (249) and kills/set 3.56 in the league this season. She hit .226 for the weekend and posted 20 digs (1.82/set). Moore also delivered six aces.

MATCH ONE VS. SOUTHERN INDIANA (L, 3-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Warriors led 7-3 in the opening set after a Haley Tenelshof (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Jenison) service ace and 10-4 after back-to-back USI attack errors. Mikayla Shell (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) put WSU on top 20-18 and another Southern Indiana attack error extended the lead to 21-18. Later in the set, the Eagles used a 4-0 run to tie the game at 23-23. A Moore kill tied the set at 25-25 before USI won the final two points to capture the set 27-25.

- Following two straight aces from Ellie Rodriguez (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central), WSU led 5-1 to begin the second set. Another ace, this one from Moore, gave the Green & Gold an 11-3 advantage and the Warriors would eventually lead 15-6. However, USI won the next eight points to cut the deficit to one, 15-14. WSU slowed the momentum with two points before the Eagles took an 18-17 lead after a 4-0 run. The Warriors regained the lead, 21-20, after a Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) block. WSU led 27-26 following a point from Emily Norscia (Livonia, Mich. / Livonia Churchill) but Southern Indiana won the next three points to win the set 29-27 and take a 2-0 match lead.

- In the third set, WSU led 12-10 after a Norscia kill. USI stormed back to take a 14-12 lead and would hold on to that two-point lead at 16-14 as well. A 4-0 run gave the Warriors an 18-16 lead and WSU would force a fourth set with a 25-20 victory. Christa Raicevich (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) sealed the win with a kill.

- The Eagles jumped out to a 7-2 lead to begin the fourth set. A 4-0 run by the Warriors trimmed USI's lead to 11-9 but USI would regain control and would extend the lead to 21-16. WSU went on a 7-1 run to take a 23-22 lead but USI won four of the last five points to win the match 26-24.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Three Warriors finished with double digit kills led by Moore with 17. Norscia collected 16 and Frazee contributed 12 kills of her own.
- Maddison Smith (Melbourne, Australia) helped the offense with 52 assists while Rodriguez was able to dig 18 balls.

MATCH TWO VS. ST. JOSEPH'S (W, 3-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- WSU led 9-4 after a kill from Moore to open the first set. St. Joseph's tied the set at 10-10 before the Warriors regained control and took a 17-11 advantage with another point from Moore. WSU cruised to a 25-16 victory. WSU won the final four points, which included to aces from Moore.

- A combo block from Norscia and Shell put the Warriors on top 10-8 in the second set. Frazee collected a kill to extend WSU's lead to 15-12. SJC won the race to 20 but the Warriors would come back to tie the set at 23-23, 24-24 and 25-25. WSU finally secured a one-point lead (27-26) after a kill from Norscia. The set was tied at 27-27 before a kill from Norscia and Moore gave the Warriors a 2-0 match lead.

- Frazee and Norscia alternated kills during a 5-0 run in the third set to take an 8-6 lead. WSU led 14-10 but the Pumas would take a 17-16 lead after a 7-2 run. The Warriors were the first to 20 and would eventually take a 22-20 lead after a Shell point. The set was a back-and-forth affair down the stretch and WSU led 26-25 following back-to-back kills from Moore. After a SJC point, two WSU blocks secured the 3-0 sweep for the Warriors with a 28-26 set-three victory.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Moore finished with a match-high 20 kills on 43 swings to finish with a .302 hitting percentage. Norscia posted 12 kills while Frazee tallied 10.
- Smith dished out 43 assists while Rodriguez led four Warriors with 10 or more digs with 13.

UP NEXT
The Warriors will host Lake Erie on Friday at 7 PM inside the Matthaei.
