DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball squad (0-1 overall) began its 2015-16 season with an 82-51 setback to Kentucky Wesleyan (1-0 overall) in the second game of day one of the 2015 GLIAC/GMAC Challenge being hosted by WSU. Tiffin rallied for an 88-84 overtime victory over Alderson Broaddus in the opening game Saturday evening.
The Warriors trailed early (4-0) against the Panthers before knotting the score at 4-4 and 6-6. KWC went on a 10-0 run as WSU went nearly five minutes between lay-ups from junior
Joel Ndondo (Ajax, Ont. / Christian Faith Center Academy). After a steal and fast-break lay-up by sophomore
Marcus Moore (Lansing, Mich. / Waverly) cut the deficit to six, Kentucky Wesleyan tallied for straight points and the Warriors were never closer than nine the rest of the game.
Sophomore guard
Ronald Booth (Detroit, Mich. / Consortium) and Ndondo each had six points in the opening 20 minutes as Wayne State was limited to 31 percent (10-of-32) from the floor compared to 54 percent (15-of-28) for Kentucky Wesleyan. Each team made two triples in the opening half, with the Panthers making 6-of-7 from the charity stripe and the Warriors connecting on 1-of-4 from the foul line.
Wayne State forced nine KWC turnovers in the first 20 minutes but managed just four points off turnovers and trailed 38-23 at the break.
Panther Marcus Fillyaw scored the first four points of the second half and KWC's Jordan Jacks added a bucket to extend the Warrior deficit to 21 before junior
Michael Lewis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) drained a triple.
Kentucky Wesleyan shot a blistering 64 percent (14-of-22) from the field after the break compared to 23 percent (8-of-35) for Wayne State.
The Warriors grabbed 19 offensive rebounds but could only muster 10 second-chance points in the contest.
Ndondo led WSU with 10 points, while junior guard
Clark Bishop (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) added nine points. Both Booth and Lewis chipped in with eight points apiece in a balanced Warrior scoring attack. Moore grabbed a team-best six rebounds.
Ken-Jah Bosley tallied a game-high 21 points with Jacks contributing 19 points with both Devin Langford (16 points) and C.J. Blackwell (15 points) scoring in double digits off the KWC bench. Jacks recorded a game-high eight rebounds as the Panthers held a 41-37 edge on the boards.
The 2015 GLIAC/GMAC Challenge will conclude with a pair of contests on Sunday as Tiffin battles Kentucky Wesleyan at 2 p.m., followed by the Wayne State game vs. Alderson Broaddus at 4 p.m.
