BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Two members of the Wayne State University women's indoor track squad participated Friday evening in the NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

Senior Lauren Gagnon (Waterford, Mich. / Mott) finished 14th in the 5k event in a time of 17:21.65, while junior Chelsea Johnson (Oxford, Mich.) placed 17th in a time of 17:27.94.

"We just are not fast enough to get on the breakaway train," said head coach Rick Cummins.  "Making this meet is huge.  They had the 15th and 16th best times in the country this year.  They were not expected to score (top 8).  They went for it and when it was apparent they were not going to be top eight, they didn't give up.  tThey regrouped and fought to finish tough.

"It was a good effort for their first NCAA Track Championship," added Cummins.
