Four Track and Field Student-Athletes Earn All-Region Recognition

McCarty, Thomas, Wilson and Zahnow honored by the USTFCCCA.

DETROIT -- Four members of the Wayne State University women's outdoor track and field squad were recognized with USTFCCCA All-Midwest Region honors.

All-Region accolades are awarded to those with a top five time/mark in their particular region.  Honored from WSU were javelin thrower Ella McCarty, hurdlers Keneisha Thomas and Megan Zahnow, and sprinter Avery Wilson.

Freshman Ella McCarty (Timmins, Ont. / O'Gorman) earned the fourth-best javelin mark in the Midwest Region at 42.25m.  She won the GLIAC Championship with her first throw of the competition.

Throws Coach Celine Freeman-Gibb on McCarty:  "Ella worked extremely hard this year.  Making the transition from a multi-sport high school athlete to strictly a javelin thrower as a freshman is not an easy task.  Especially when competing indoors isn't an option.  She is the personification of hard work and dedication, and has a unique ability to find joy in every single training session.  This is only the beginning for Ella.  We accomplished our goals for this year and next year's goal list continues to grow.  We are so proud of her accomplishments!"

Redshirt junior Keneisha Thomas (Madison Heights, Mich. / Lamphere) earned the third-fastest 400m hurdles time clocking in at 59.78 at the Azusa Pacific Bryan Clay Invitational, while also notching the ninth-fastest 100m hurdles time (14.27).

Senior Avery Wilson (Davison, Mich.) posted the fourth-fastest 400m dash time (54.95) to win the GLIAC Championships.

Sophomore Megan Zahnow (Vicksburg, Mich.) recorded the second-fastest 100m hurdles time (13.77) at the St. Francis Fighting Chance Invite.

Narrowly missing All-Region recognition were:

Graduate student Robin Bresolin (LaSalle, Ont. / St. Thomas of Villanova), who placed eighth in the steeplechase with a time of 10:53.75 posted at the University of La Verne Leopard Invitational.

Graduate student Emily Gordon (Northville, Mich.) had the seventh-fastest 800m run time with a 2:09.30 from the Azusa Pacific Bryan Clay Invitational, and the 10th fastest 1,500m time of 4:30.99 from the GVSU Extra Weekend Meet.

Junior Nicole Warren (Saline, Mich.) had a season-best triple jump mark of 11.60m to win the GLIAC Championships and tie-for-eighth in the Midwest Region.

Freshman Ava Peters (Livonia, Mich. / Franklin) had the 10th-fastest 10K time of 35:27.16.

Freshman Ella Hufnagel (Fowler, Mich.) posted the 11th-highest heptathlon total with a score of 4,337 at the GLIAC Championships.

The 4x400m group of senior Hanne Bastiaansen (Tessenderlo, Belgium), freshman Audrey Huizinga (Manistee, Mich.), junior Rachel Overgaard (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Ann Arbor Huron) and Wilson posted the seventh-fastest time at 3:45.78 (at the Azusa Pacific Bryan Clay Invitational), while the 4x100m relay quartet of freshman Marissa Madia (Belle River, Ont. / Belle River District), sophomore Lauren Wooten (Grand Blanc, Mich.), Bastiaansen and Wilson garnered the eighth-fastest time at 46.37 set at the GVSU Al Owens Classic.
