ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's track and field squad concluded the 2014-15 school year for all Warrior sports finishing in a tie-for-50th at the 2015 NCAA Outdoor National Championships. The Warriors totaled four points based on
Chelsea Johnson's finish on Friday in the 3,000m steeplechase. Seventy-three (73) schools scored at least one point over the three days.
On the final day of competition, sophomore
Elizabeth Herriman (Adrian, Mich. / Sand Creek) nearly equaled her previous school record in the javelin with a toss of 44.21m (145-0) to finish 12th. Her previous best of 44.39m (145-08) was set earlier this month at the GVSU Last Chance Meet. Herriman became the first thrower in the three-year existence of women's outdoor track and field at WSU to compete at nationals.
"Elizabeth threw close to her personal record," commented WSU assistant coach
Makiba Batten. "It was not enough to get into the finals. These girls were not playing around. The meet record was broken three times and six girls had big personal record marks. I am so proud of Elizabeth for her effort and hard work. Thank you for making the end of the season awesome!"
"Elizabeth had a tremendous year," stated head coach
Rick Cummins. "This is such a huge confidence boost for her moving forward. She had a good meet. This is a big stage and she handled herself well. She is the first thrower in school history to make the national championships. It was a great day for her. I am proud of her and coach Batten."
Johnson and junior
Kayla Balfour (St. Clair, Mich.) both competed on Saturday evening in the 5k race.
Balfour finished 21st (17:40.40), while Johnson placed 23rd (17:42.41).
