DETROIT -- Over the next few weeks we will continue previewing each position on the 2015 Wayne State University football team with each position coach highlighting their respective units. Head coach
Paul Winters, who also oversees the running backs, is featured in this segment.
Last year, WSU produced its ninth 1,000-yard running back in the last 10 seasons as
Desmond Martin (now of the Detroit Lions) rushed for 1,578 and 16 touchdowns. Even though Martin and fellow senior
Jay Hayes have graduated, the cupboard is not bare in the Warriors backfield.
Redshirt sophomore
Romello Brown (Westland, Mich. / Livonia Churchill) rushed for 102 yards and one score in 20 carries a year ago. Complimenting Brown in the backfield will be sophomore
Demetrius Stinson (Detroit, Mich. / Douglass), redshirt freshman
Deiontae Nicholas (Chesterfield, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse North) and redshirt senior
Rabeah Beydoun (Dearborn, Mich. / Fordson). Stinson is entering his third fall camp (second at Wayne State after spending his initial season at Ferris State). Nicholas was a freshman redshirt last year at WSU, while Beydoun averaged nearly six yards per carry last season and also made a couple of special teams tackles.
Waiting in the wings are two highly-touted recruits in
DeOntay Moffett (Muskegon Heights, Mich. / Mona Shores) and
James Hill (Livonia, Mich. / Clarenceville). Moffett was selected to the
Detroit News Division 1-2 All-State Honorable Mention squad as well as the
Detroit Free Press Honorable Mention All-State team. He gained 1,534 rushing yards on 233 attempts with 19 touchdowns as a senior. Meanwhile, Hill was named to the 2014
Detroit Free Press All-Metro West Honorable Mention Team after rushing for 1,171 yards and 19 touchdowns on 135 carries in 2014.
Competition will be fierce at the fullback position after veteran
Sean McAuliffe graduated. Redshirt junior
Garrett Wiska (Northville, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) earned his first WSU letter a year ago after transferring from Notre Dame College. Redshirt sophomore
Jason McCauslin (Plainwell, Mich.) is entering his third camp with the Warriors. Freshman
Stephen Charron (Palm Harbor, Fla.) could also be in the mix.
