Women's Hoop Falls In Highest Scoring GLIAC Game In History, 111-106

Ashley Wilson leads WSU with 26 points in 41 minutes.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (7-9 overall, 2-8 GLIAC) lost 111-106 in double overtime on Saturday at Ohio Dominican University (12-4 overall, 7-3 GLIAC) in the highest scoring league game in GLIAC history.  The 106 points by the Warriors were the most-ever by a losing team in GLIAC history (previous was 101 by Grand Valley State in a 106-101 loss to Ashland on Jan. 23, 1997, in the previous highest scoring game in the GLIAC).

The contest was WSU's lone road game in a seven-game span.  The Warriors went 1-2 at home and begin another three-game home stand this Thursday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The host Panthers scored eight of the game's first 10 points, before senior Ashley Wilson (Portage, Mich. / Northern) came off the bench to drain a triple.  ODU scored the next six points and WSU was never closer than five the rest of the quarter.

The Warriors trailed 24-15 at the end of the first period despite senior Kristen Long (Durand, Mich.) grabbing a loose ball and sinking a jumper from just beyond the foul line as the clock expired.

Wayne State trailed by 13 (31-18) with 6:20 left in the second stanza after Panther Megan Eyre split a pair from the charity stripe, but the Warriors answered with a 16-4 run to end the first half down just 35-34.  Sophomore Shannon Wilson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Bloomfield Hills) started the run with a free throw and ended the spurt with a long three as the clock hit 0:00.  The WSU defense forced an over-and-back and Wilson took the inbounds with 3.4 seconds left.

Ohio Dominican tallied the first five points of the third quarter before Wayne State responded and knotted the game at 44-44 as Ashley Wilson scored on a conventional three-point play.  After a defensive stop, Shannon Wilson made two free throws to give WSU its first lead of the game at 46-44.

ODU's Darian Rose hit a three pointer before Ashley Wilson converted another old-fashioned three-point play.  Freshman Paige Villemure (Flat Rock, Mich.), who scored her first collegiate points in the second period, had a steal then an offensive rebound and bucket to put the Warriors ahead 51-47.

Sophomore Payton Birchmeier (Corunna, Mich.) hit back-to-back triples pushing the Wayne State advantage to 57-52 after 30 minutes.

WSU led by six (62-56) 90 seconds into the fourth quarter as Birchmeier drained her third three-pointer in a three-minute span.  After back-to-back stops on defense by the Warriors, senior Brittany Streetman (Warren, Mich. / Lincoln) connected from beyond the arc giving Wayne State its largest lead of the game (nine points) at 65-56.  The Panthers responded with a 13-0 run as WSU went scoreless for nearly 3:30 until a basket by Ashley Wilson.

Trailing by five (77-72) with under 30 seconds left in regulation, the Wayne State defense forced an ODU miscue and Ashley Wilson made a jumper from inside the foul line and converted the free throw attempt.  Ohio Dominican's Melissa Scherpenberg made two foul shots with 12.6 seconds left before Shannon Wilson drained a step-back triple with 4.3 seconds remaining to cut the Warrior deficit to one (79-78)

Eyre was fouled with 3.0 seconds left and made both from the charity stripe.  Long hauled in a long inbounds pass from Streetman and banked in an off-balance three to send the game into overtime.  It was WSU's third end of a quarter buzzer-beating shot of the afternoon.

With the score knotted at 90-90 and 1:36 left in the first overtime, Panther Madi Rittinger made a free throw as the fire alarm started making noise and strobe lights going off.  After nearly 10 minutes of the lights and alarm were turned off and the teams were given a few minutes to do lay-up drills.  Rittinger missed her foul shot as play resumed, then 47 seconds later Scherpenberg made two free throws giving the hosts a 93-90 advantage.

With 27 seconds remaining Ashley Wilson made her first free throw attempt, then Birchmeier grabbed the missed and tied the game at 93-93 with her offensive put back.  ODU worked for the last shot but Scherpenberg's lay-up was blocked by Birchmeier, then Scherpenberg missed a jumper as the clock expired sending the game to the next second extra period.

After a Streetman lay-up tied the game at 95-95, Eyre had a conventional three-point play before junior Ajai Meeks (Detroit, Mich. / Pershing) sank both foul shot attempts.  ODU's Kayla Cook drained a triple to put the Panthers ahead by four (101-97) with 3:05 left.

Trailing 103-100 after Rittinger split a pair from the foul line, Streetman knotted the game at 103 on a step-back triple from the top of the circle with 38.9 seconds remaining.  An ODU timeout allowed the Panthers to move the ball into the front court which led to a Scherpenberg three-pointer from the top of the key.  WSU missed two foul shot attempts and Ohio Dominican called another timeout to advance the ball.  Eyre made two free throws with 14.8 seconds left before a WSU timeout.  Streetman drained another step-back three with six seconds left to make it a two-point contest at 108-106.

Two WSU miscues in the final 5.4 seconds along with Eyre making 3-of-4 from the charity stripe gave ODU the 111-106 win.
