ROCHESTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's swimming and diving team garnered a 178-106 loss to Division I, Oakland to open the 2016-17 season on Saturday afternoon at the Oakland University Aquatic Center in Rochester, Mich.
RELAY RESULTS
- The Warriors tallied 11 points in the first event as sophomore
Dima Drobnych (Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine), freshman
Sasha Palazzo (Verona, Italy), sophomore
Rasmus Olsen (Kastrup, Denmark) and senior
Josh Schacht (Schoolcraft, Mich. / Mattawan) won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:32.87.
- Sophomore
Ahmed Ahmed (Alexandria, Egypt), freshman
Ryan Katulski (Novi, Mich.), Palazzo and Schacht notched a first-place finish in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:11.63.
INDIVIDUAL RESULTS
- Olsen won both the 100 butterfly (49.83) and 200 butterfly with a time of 1:52.93, while senior
Mitch Bohr (Novi, Mich. / Walled Lake Western) and junior
Nick Quigley (Guelph, Ont.) finished fifth (2:00.71) and sixth (2:01.80) in the 200 butterfly, respectively.
- Palazzo posted a first-place finish in the 200 breast (2:06.77) and a second-place finish in the 100 breast (57.01), while Drobnych earned three points for WSU after he placed third in both the 100 back (51.18) and 200 back (1:55.75).
- Freshman
Leo Calice Pagotto de Oliveira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) made his collegiate debut with a third-place finish in the 1000 free with a time of 10:00.71.
- Ahmed notched a third-place finish in the 200 free with a time of 1:43.32 and placed fourth in the 500 free (4:50.59).
- Freshman diver in
Riese Penn (Ionia, Mich.) placed third in both diving events with total scores of 224.85 (one-meter) and 253.87 (three-meter). Classmate
Nate Michna (Belleville, Mich.) finished fourth on both boards with scores of 198.97 (one-meter) and 253.87 (three-meter).
- Schacht garnered a fourth-place finish in the 50 free (21.69), and Katulski debuted as a Warrior with a fifth-place finish (21.74). Katulski also placed fifth in the 100 free with a time of 48.37, and Schacht finished sixth (48.66).
UP NEXT
- WSU will host Ashland in a GLIAC showdown on Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. in the Matthaei Natatorium. Wayne State topped the Eagles, a year ago, 155-130.
