FINDLAY, Ohio -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (10-11, 5-10 GLIAC) fell at Findlay (13-8, 8-7 GLIAC) 87-80 on Monday night. The Warriors trailed for much of the night. However, WSU did cut the deficit to four (70-66) at the six-minute mark of the fourth quarter but the comeback attempt ran out of time.
Highlighted in the loss was a record night from
Brittany Streetman (Warren, Mich. / Lincoln). She scored 40 points on 15-of-24 shooting including seven three-pointers. Her 40 points is the second-most in program history. The all-time single-game record is Jodi Young's 48 points in 2004 against Grand Valley State. Her seven triples is tied-for-fourth all-time with four others.
HOW IT HAPPENED- Findlay jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first quarter after consecutive jumpers from Margaret Wuebker. Streetman and
Shannon Wilson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Bloomfield Hills) connected on back-to-back treys to tie the game at 11-11 with 5:39 to play in the period. A
Payton Birchmeier (Corunna, Mich.) lay-up briefly gave WSU a 14-13 lead but the Oilers would end the opening quarter on a 13-5 run to lead 26-19.
- Another triple from
Shannon Wilson cut the home lead to 28-26 at the 7:18 mark of the second stanza. Streetman's triple with 3:36 left before halftime tied the game at 35-35. Findlay would regain control and lead 44-37 at the break.
- The Warriors scored the first four points of the second half to trim UF's lead to 46-41 at the 7:52 mark. WSU would not get closer than four points the rest of the third quarter as the Oilers held onto a 62-55 advantage with 10 minutes to play.
- A conventional three-point play from Streetman brought Wayne State within four (70-66) with six minutes to play. Findlay would hold onto the momentum and collect the 87-80 victory.
LEADING THE WARRIORS- Joining Streetman in double digits were
Ashley Wilson (Portage, Mich. / Northern) with 15 points and
Shannon Wilson with 10.
Ashley Wilson notched her fifth double-double of the season and third in the last four games with a game-high 10 rebounds.
LEADING THE OILERS- Four of the five UF starters scored in double figures led by 25 points from Wuebker.
