DETROIT -- "To have our football schedules done for the next three (3) years is a nice benefit for our fans," commented Wayne State University Director of Athletics
Rob Fournier.
"It allows some planning ... and a chance to look forward to our travel sites. I know our non-conference games in both Indianapolis (IN) and Canton (OH) are locations our supporters like to visit with their civic amenities and renew rivalries with great competitors," added Fournier.
With the GLIAC slated to have 10 football playing institutions in 2017, the final nine weeks of the season will consist of league contests leaving the first two weeks open for non-conference opponents.
WSU will play Walsh in Tom Benson Stadium on Sept. 2, 2017. Tom Benson Stadium is the site of the annual National Football League (NFL) Hall of Fame game.
The following week (Sept. 9), the Warriors will entertain the UIndy Greyhounds, who will make their first appearance at Tom Adams Field since Nov. 6, 2010. In that contest, Wayne State junior running back Josh Renel totaled 319 all-purpose yards (177 rushing, 74 punt returns, 51 kickoff returns and 17 receiving) and three rushing touchdowns.
The Warriors will commence the 2018 campaign with a Thursday night home game versus the Cavaliers on August 30 before traveling to Key Stadium in Indianapolis for a match-up on Saturday, Sept. 8. WSU has been victorious the last five times it has played at UIndy, but all five games have been decided by nine points or less with an average of five points per contest.
Wayne State will have its 2016 annual spring game this Saturday with the contest slated to start at noon at Tom Adams Field.
WSU will begin its 2016 regular season at Northwood on Saturday, Sept. 3.
