Over the next couple of weeks we will continue previewing each position on the 2016 Wayne State University football team with each position coach highlighting their respective units.
Jeff Reardon, Quarterbacks Coach, is featured in this segment.
Entering the 2015 campaign, the quarterback position was slated to be led by fifth-year senior
Carl Roscoe, who made his 16th career start in the opener at Michigan Tech. Behind Roscoe were four other signal callers who had never taken a snap in a regular-season college football game. Roscoe was injured on the first play after the opening kickoff at MTU and
Trevor Van Tubbergen (Holland, Mich. / West Ottawa) finished out the quarter before true freshman
D.J. Zezula (Clarkston, Mich.) entered the contest in the second period and proceeded to start the final 10 games of the season.
Zezula was voted WSU's Offensive Rookie of the Year after leading the Warriors to a 6-4 record in his 10 starts. He set WSU marks for most passing yards and most passing touchdowns by a true freshman, while recording the third-best passing efficiency rating for a season (among all quarterbacks) in school history (min. 105 attempts). Zezula passed for 1,786 yards (the 10th highest single-season total in school history) and 14 touchdowns, while completing 56 percent of his passes (fourth best single-season mark with at least 105 attempts).
Heading into the 2016 fall camp, Zezula will be pushed for playing time by redshirt freshman
Dakota Kupp (Waterford, Mich. / Mott). Kupp attended Central Michigan last fall, but transferred to the Warriors in January and had a strong spring.
Van Tubbergen will begin his fourth year at WSU and will look to build upon a solid spring. Redshirt freshman
Christian Klink (Olmsted Falls, Ohio / Parma Heights Holy Name) has had a year to adjust to the college game.
WSU added depth at the quarterback position by signing a trio of newcomers, who most likely will redshirt in 2016.
Jake AmRhein (South Elgin, Ill.) is an all-purpose quarterback with the ability to drop back in the pocket and find receivers all over the field or tuck the ball and run over defenders to get the first down, according to WSU head coach
Paul Winters.
Westley Brandon (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins Memorial) has really good size and speed for the position, along with a very strong arm said Winters.
Also joining the Warriors is
Steven Glenn (Lincoln Park, Mich.). Glenn, at 6-2, 250, is someone that can play in the backfield, tight end or anywhere in the defensive front in the future added Winters.
