Men's Basketball Unable to Control Huskies

The Warriors led by four at halftime, but Michigan Tech scored 46 second-half points.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (8-7, 6-4 GLIAC) began a key four-game home stand on Thursday night against Michigan Tech (8-9, 5-5 GLIAC) and the Warriors were unable to hold onto a four-point halftime lead as the Huskies came away with a 76-66 road victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- A slow start for Wayne State allowed Michigan Tech to take an 8-2 lead forcing head coach David Greer to burn an early timeout at the 17:32 mark.  The Warriors began to find their footing and pulled within two on a Chuck Key (Detroit, Mich. / Cass Tech) layup before Ronald Booth (Detroit, Mich. / Consortium) joined the 1,000-point club and gave WSU a 11-10 advantage lead with a triple with 14:49 remaining in the opening half.  Three straight buckets from Key pushed the home lead to 19-12 at the 10-minute mark.  A 9-0 run by the Huskies gave the visitors a 25-23 lead with 6:20 left before halftime.  The teams traded baskets but a Latin Davis, Jr. (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Milan) jumper and another Key basket gave Wayne State a 34-30 lead at the 1:30 mark.  That would be the score at the break as both teams went scoreless over the final 90 seconds.  Key paced WSU with 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting in the first half.

- The Huskies came out of the locker room to begin the second half and quickly took a 35-34 lead at the 18:02 mark on a left-handed hook from Kyle Monroe.  The visitors continued to seize the momentum and extended their lead to eight, 47-39, with 14 minutes remaining to play.  Layups from George Spencer (Detroit, Mich. / Belleville) and Marcus Moore (Lansing, Mich. / Waverly) trimmed the deficit to four, 47-43, at the 12:45 mark.  A trey from Bryan Heath gave MTU its largest lead of the night up to that point at 52-43 with 10:33 left in the contest.  The Warriors would go without a field goal from the 12:45 mark until the 8:07 mark, allowing the Huskies to lead by as many as 10.  However, a layup from Davis and a three-point play from Karim Murray (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) pulled the Green & Gold within four with 7:20 remaining.  After being fouled behind the arc, Booth connected on all three free throws to cut lead to 59-57 at the 5:10 mark.  Heath hit from deep with 3:10 left to play to push MTU's advantage to 66-59.  WSU's offense was unable to find important buckets down the stretch and MTU would win by 10, 76-66.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Key matched his career-high with 25 points, while Spencer notched a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds.

LEADING THE HUSKIES
- Monroe tallied a game-high 34 points, including 24 in the second half.  Heath scored 14, while Tommy Lucca finished with 13 points.
