Women's Basketball Drops Weekend Finale, 68-57, to Lake Erie

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (0-2 overall) fell short, 68-57, to visiting Lake Erie College (1-0 overall) on Sunday afternoon at the Matthaei.  The contest was the second game of the weekend as part of the GLIAC/G-MAC Challenge.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After trailing 4-2 early in the contest, the Warriors rattled off six consecutive points, which concluded when freshman Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) drained her first career triple.  The Storm came back to tie the game at 8-8 with 5:05 left in the opening period, but senior Paige Villemure (Flat Rock, Mich.) put WSU ahead 10-8 with a lay-up.  Wayne State remained in the lead the rest of the first quarter.  Junior Alex Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) recorded WSU's last three points of the first period, extending the lead 19-14.  Lake Erie's Breanna Bauer answered with a bucket in the waning seconds to cut the Warriors lead to three, 19-16, after the opening 10 minutes.

The Storm had an 11-0 run, which began with Bauer's aforementioned bucket, to pull ahead 25-19 early in the second quarter.  Sophomore Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.) ended Wayne State's scoreless drought of over four minutes with a lay-up to make it 25-21, with 6:10 on the clock.  Freshman Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) scored her first two collegiate buckets on back-to-back possessions, but the Warriors still trailed 30-25.   A lay-up by junior Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep) and a free throw by senior Jessica Murphy (Oxford, Mich.) cut the WSU deficit to two (30-28) with three minutes remaining in the first half.  Lake Erie led at halftime, 37-32.

The Storm scored the first five points after intermission to lead by 10 (42-32), then Lake Erie led by as many as 16 (52-36) with 3:40 left in the third quarter.  Wayne State outscored LEC 12-3 over the final 3:20 of the period, to pull within seven at 55-48.  Both senior Ja'Nae Williams (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) and Villemure had four points apiece for the Warriors during the run.

A jumper by freshman Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) cut the Wayne State deficit to four (56-52) with just over 7:30 remaining.  The teams traded buckets before the Storm extended its lead to 12 (67-55) by scoring seven straight points in a span of 90 seconds.
