Men's Tennis Competes in the Northwestern Ohio Racer Invitational

LIMA, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's tennis squad participated in the Northwestern Ohio Racer Invitational, Oct. 6-7.

A SINGLES

Sophomore Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) defeated Tiffin's Nikita Parfenov (6-2, 6-2) in the first round of eight. He fell short in a third set against Northwestern Ohio's Radu Popa (6-3, 2-6, 10-8) in the round of four.

Senior Griffin Mertz (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) won his round-of-eight match against Lawrence Tech's Alex Tammaro (6-3, 6-0). He moved on to win a three-set match against Northwestern Ohio's Marcos Salazar (6-4, 0-6, 10-5). Mertz lost (6-2, 6-3) to UNOH's Radu Popa in the finals.

B SINGLES

Pierre Renaudie (Sathonay-Camp, France) claimed a victory against Hillsdale College's Michael Szabo (6-3, 6-3). Moving on to the round of four, he won his match versus Northwestern Ohio's David Ayguavives (6-2, 6-4). Renaudie claimed the B Singles title after a win against UNOH's Artur Culicovschi (6-3, 6-4) in the finals.

Senior Taylor Vane (Southampton, England) fell short in a third set against Culicovschi (6-1, 4-6, 10-7) in the round of eight. He moved on to play Northwood University's Ben Brandherm's, winning the match (6-4, 6-1). Vane claimed the B Singles consolation title after a win against Tiffin's Tom Arias (6-2, 6-4).

C SINGLES

Freshman David Solar (Prague, Czech Republic) lost in the first round to Northwestern Ohio's Lars Kaplusch in a third set (2-6, 6-4, 10-8). He played in the consolation round, losing to Tiffin's Justin Kopronica (6-4, 7-6(8-6)). He had another chance to grab a win and defeated Tiffin's Austin Mohamedali (6-1, 6-4).

D SINGLES

Redshirt junior Jason Potter (Sterling Heights, Mich. / International Academy East) fell short in the round of eight to Tiffin's Hugo Chatras (6-1, 6-2). He moved on to the consolation round, but lost against Lawrence Tech's Alejo Godall (6-3, 6-4). Potter was able to snag a win, however, against Tiffin's Ryan Gase (6-1, 6-2).

E SINGLES

Senior Nicholas Ang (Rochester, Mich.) notched a victory against Tiffin's Ryan Breaed (6-3, 6-1) in the first round. He fell short in the round-of-four match vs. Hillsdale's Gabe Katz (7-6(7-3), 6-0), but moved on to defeat Lawrence Tech's Viktor Kolesynchenko (8-6) in the consolation round.

A DOUBLES

Mertz and Renaudie lost 8-5 to Hillsdale College's Charlie Adams and John Ciraci in the round of eight. They moved on to sweep the consolation rounds, however, against Tiffin's Nikita Parfenov and Tom Arias (8-6) and TU's Austin Mohamedali and Hugo Chatras (8-5).

Karcz and Vane earned a 7-4 win in the first round against Lawrence Tech's Alax Tammaro and Alex Rajal. They then defeated Northwestern Ohio's Radu Popa and Lars Kaplusch in a tiebreaker (9-8(7-4)) in the semifinals. Karcz and Vane clinched the A Doubles title after winning 8-5 against Northwood's Kobus Sauerman and Pablo Salamanca.

B DOUBLES

Ang and Solar fell short 9-7 to NU's Ben Brandherm and David Reinauer in the first round. They swept the consolation rounds, however, with a 8-5 win against Tiffin's Justin Kopronica and Ryan Gase, and a 8-4 victory vs. Lawrence Tech's Robert Saitov and Lukas Obel.

C DOUBLES

Freshman Max Rink (Wetzlar, Germany) and Potter lost their match 8-4 against Northwood's Haden Drury and Ivan Medvynski in the round of eight.

UP NEXT
The Warriors will begin their regular season on Friday, Feb. 8, in the first home match against Walsh College.
