Women's Basketball Falls In GLIAC Opener

Warriors upended 68-51 by Ferris State.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (2-4 overall, 0-1 GLIAC) began conference play with a 68-51 setback against visiting Ferris State University (4-2 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) Thursday evening at the Matthaei.

The Warriors raced out to an 8-0 advantage less than two minutes into the contest on a triple by junior Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep), an offensive rebound and put back from freshman Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) and a three-pointer by freshman Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.).  

After a Bulldog timeout, the teams traded buckets before FSU went on a 9-2 run to cut the WSU margin to one (12-11) with 2:27 left in the opening stanza.  Senior Jessica Murphy (Oxford, Mich.) tallied five points in the final two minutes of the quarter to give Wayne State a 17-15 lead after 10 minutes.

The Warriors were just 2-of-18 from the floor in the second period, while Ferris State connected on eight of its 13 field goal attempts, including two triples, to outscore the hosts 19-6 and lead by 11 (34-23) at intermission.

The Bulldogs scored eight fast-break points in the third quarter and extended their advantage to 21 (56-35) heading into the final period.

Wayne State outscored the visitors 16-12 over the final 10 minutes.

TEAM STATS

Wayne State shot just 30 percent (20-of-67) from the floor, while FSU was 28-of-56 (50 percent).  WSU made five of its 16 triple tries (31 percent), with the Bulldogs also making 5-of-16 from long range.  The Warriors were just 6-of-14 (43 percent) from the charity stripe, with Ferris State making 7-of-11 (64 percent) free throw attempts.  FSU held a 42-40 edge in rebounding along with a 36-18 advantage for points in the paint.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Chambers and senior India Hawkins (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) tied for team-high scoring honors with nine points apiece.  Senior Ja'Nae Williams (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) grabbed 11 rebounds, with Cherney adding 10 boards.  Freshman Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) had a team-best three assists.

LEADING THE BULLDOGS

Lilly George scored a game-high 18 points and had nine rebounds, while Brayene Benner had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

UP NEXT

Wayne State will host Lake Superior State at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Matthaei.
