Women's Hoops Falls At No. 15-Grand Valley State

Williams leads WSU with a game-high 17 points.

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (4-5 overall, 2-2 GLIAC) concluded the second weekend of GLIAC play with a 73-42 setback at 15th-ranked Grand Valley State University (8-1 overall, 4-0 GLIAC) Saturday evening.

The host Lakers scored the first 11 points of the contest, before senior Ja'Nae Williams (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) connected on back-to-back jumpers cutting the WSU deficit to seven (11-4).

GVSU ended the opening stanza on a 9-2 run to lead 20-6 after 10 minutes.  The Warriors were 0-for-4 from beyond the arc and just 3-of-11 from two-point range in the first quarter, along with three turnovers.

After Wayne State went on a 10-2 run, keyed by five points from freshman Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.), Grand Valley State concluded the first half by scoring the final 10 points for a 35-16 lead at intermission.

WSU began the second half on an 8-1 run as junior Alex Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) connected from three-point range as did Williams, with freshman Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) scoring a bucket.

The Lakers tallied 11 of the next 12 points until a jumper by junior Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep) made it a 47-27 contest.  A Chambers layup and a jumper by Williams pulled the Warriors within 16 (51-35) after three quarters.

Wayne State was held without a field goal for the first 5:25 of the fourth period and was outscored 16-1 until an old-fashioned three-point play by Williams.
