Men's Basketball Falters Late at SVSU

The Warriors will host Northwood on Saturday for Senior Day.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (13-9 overall, 11-6 GLIAC) put its five-game winning streak on the line on Thursday night at Saginaw Valley State (11-14 overall, 8-9 GLIAC) and the Warriors lost 78-71.  WSU led 34-26 at halftime, but the Cardinals outscored the Warriors 52-37 in the second half to upset Wayne State.  Despite the loss, WSU is still tied for the third seed in the GLIAC standings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- SVSU started the contest quickly, leading 10-0 at the 15:55 mark before junior Latin Davis, Jr. (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Milan) put the Warriors on the board with their first field goal and added a free throw to complete the three-point play with 14:47 remaining in the first half.  WSU began chip away and trailed by two, 10-8, after a bucket from senior Marcus Moore (Lansing, Mich. / Waverly) but the Cardinals stretched their lead to six with just over 10 minutes left to play.  The deficit reached one point on three occasions from the 9:17 mark to the 6:03 mark but Wayne State was unable to find the game-tying point.  A jumper from senior Chuck Key (Detroit, Mich. / Cass Tech) gave the Green & Gold its first lead of the night, 24-23, at the 4:11 mark.  A tip-in from Key gave the visiting Warriors a five-point lead, 30-25, with 2:25 left before intermission.  A Ronald Booth (Detroit, Mich. / Consortium) layup and two more points from Moore gave the Warriors a 34-26 advantage at halftime.

- An old fashioned three-point play from Moore gave WSU a 40-35 lead at the 17:25 mark of the second half.  SVSU tied the game at 42-42 after a triple from DJ Hoskins with 15:38 left to play.  The Cards led 46-42 at the 12:38 mark but a Karim Murray (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) free throw kept the Warriors within two, 47-45.  However, SVSU seized the momentum and extended its lead to nine, 54-45, at the 9:15 mark.  Key made a pair of free throws to bring WSU within five, 65-60 with 5:41 left to play and he followed with a jumper to trim the home lead to three.  Moore made one of two free throw attempts and WSU trailed 69-67 at the 1:47 mark.  SVSU would not allow a Warrior comeback and would go on to win 78-71.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Moore led WSU with 21 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season, while Key tallied 20 points.  Murray notched his first career double-double with career-highs in points (13) and rebounds (12).  Key became the 19th player in program history to score 1,000 career points.

LEADING THE CARDINALS
- Five Cardinals scored in double figures led by Hoskins who scored a game-high 22 points.

UP NEXT
- Wayne State will host Northwood on Saturday afternoon with tip-off scheduled for 3:00 p.m.  The five Warrior seniors will be honored prior to the game and the six members of the Hall of Fame Class of 2018 will be recognized during halftime.
