TOLEDO, Ohio – The Wayne State University.men's tennis team (4-2 overall) fell to host Toledo on Friday night, battling to a close 4-3 decision.
Sophomore
Mats Westkamp (Bonn, Germany), junior
Taylor Vane (Southampton, England), and sophomore
Derek Sammons (Coldwater, Mich.) all earned wins for the Warriors.
SINGLES RESULTS
All three Warrior points came in singles spots. Westkamp, playing at No. 1, won 6-3, 6-2 over Vince Anzalone. Vane won at the second flight, earning a 6-2, 6-7, 6-1 win over Danilo Vukotic. Sammons earned the final point at the sixth flight for WSU, winning 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
At No. 3, junior
Griffin Mertz (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) fell 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to Luka Vitosevic.
Freshman
Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) competed in the fourth flight, dropping a 6-1, 7-6 contest to Thawin Suksathaporn.
Senior
Harvey Reed (Winchester, Hampshire, England) lost to Reid Teatsorth (6-2, 6-2).
DOUBLES RESULTS
Westkamp and Vane battled Vitosevic and Vukotic in the first doubles flight, with the Rockets claiming a 6-3 win.
Mertz and Reed teamed up at No. 2, losing 6-3 to Suksathaporn and Teatsorth.
Karcz and Potter were slated to compete in the third flight, but the match went unfinished due to the singles point clinched in Division I rules.
