2018 Football Position Previews - Wide Receivers

Listen to Coach Winters thoughts on this group.

DETROIT -- Over the next few weeks, we will be previewing each position on the 2018 Wayne State University football team with each position coach highlighting their respective units.  Head coach Paul Winters discusses the wide receivers in this segment.

Nearly 80 percent of last year's wide receivers receptions return in graduate student Corey Ester (Lake Orion, Mich), junior Darece Roberson, Jr. (Muskegon, Mich. / Mona Shores), along with redshirt sophomore Ray'Jon Williams-Jackson (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Ypsilanti Community) and redshirt junior Tyler Blaszczak (Brownstown, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard).

Ester has played in 23 career games with 38 receptions for 507 yards and five touchdowns, while Roberson has played in 21 games in his two seasons, making 14 starts.  He is tied-for-17th in school history with seven touchdown receptions and 15th in average yards per catch (15.55 - min. 30 receptions).

Williams-Jackson had a breakout game by setting career-highs with nine receptions for 153 yards in the win over Northern Michigan to earn WSU Offensive Player of the Week honors a year ago.  Eight of his catches against the Wildcats went for a first down.  He finished tied-for-second on the squad with 19 receptions last season.

Three of Blaszczak's five receptions in 2017 covered at least 14 yards, including a 42-yard catch on third-and-11 vs. NMU to set up WSU's second touchdown.

Redshirt junior Kyle Lewis (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) returns to the active roster after missing all of 2017 with a pre-season injury.  Pushing for regular playing time will be redshirt juniors Marcus Bailey (Walled Lake, Mich. / Walled Lake Western) and Shane Holler (Waterford, Mich. / Clarkston).  Bailey has played in 11 games, but is still looking for his first collegiate reception, while Holler saw action in one contest a year ago.  Senior Logan Smith (Norton Shores, Mich. / Mona Shores) could see playing time at both wide receiver and tight end this fall.

Both Kameron Ford (Novi, Mich. / Walled Lake Western) and Myke Ford (Columbus, Ohio / Mifflin) redshirted as true freshmen in 2017.

Two true freshmen in Steven Mason (Port Huron, Mich. / Northern) and Nolan Kimmey (Farmington Hills, Mich. / University of Detroit Jesuit) will look to adjust to the speed of the college game in 2018.
