Lohr Makes History Following Victory at Purdue Northwest

She now holds the record for most wins as the head coach of WSU women's hoops.

HAMMOND, Ind. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (8-7 overall, 3-4 GLIAC) topped Purdue Northwest (2-11 overall, 0-7 GLIAC), 76-67, in the league contest on the road this evening.

Following a victory at PNW, head coach Carrie Lohr now holds the record for most wins (127) in WSU women's basketball history.  In her eight seasons with the Green and Gold, Lohr averages 15.88 victories per season with a 0.591 winning percentage.

After the first four minutes of back-and-fourth play, the Warriors look the lead for the remainder of the quarter thanks to a three-point jump shot by freshman forward Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.), 8-6.  Senior India Hawkins (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) shot two additional triples within a minute, 14-8.  The Pride attempted to close the gap by scoring the next two buckets, 14-12.  Junior Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep) made a jump shot at 3:26, 16-12, four seconds after entering the contest.  PNW's Tayler Vauters scored from in the paint, but senior forward Paige Villemure (Flat Rock, Mich.) quickly responded with a layup at 2:16, 18-14.  Vauters made two free throws before Villemure drained another bucket, 20-16, with 44 seconds on the clock.  Senior guard Ja'Nae Williams (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) shot a free throw to end the first period, 21-16.

Hawkins began the second stanza with a three-pointer, 24-16.  Purdue Northwest scored the next four points with two layups, 24-20, before a three minute scoring drought for the Pride.  Chambers tallied four WSU points in 40 seconds, 28-22, followed by back-to-back layups by Villemure and freshman Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville), 32-22.  During a scoreless three and a half minutes for the Warriors, PNW recorded eight points.  Chambers shot two from the charity stripe, followed by another two from Purdue Northwest's Danielle Nennig.  The Green and Gold finished the second stanza ahead by two, 34-32.

Nennig tied the game, 34-34, in the first 10 seconds of the third quarter, but junior guard Alex Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) scored from beyond the arc, 37-34.  After three lead changes, Chambers tied the score, 41-41, with 5:05 on the clock.  Purdue Northwest tallied another four points to take the lead, 45-41.  Chambers made a jump shot at 3:55, followed by a layup by freshman Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) to tie the score once again, 45-45.  Nennig shot from beyond the arc at 3:08, 48-45, but George took off to score the next eight points for Wayne State, 53-48.  Nennig ended the period with two free throws, 53-50.

After a slower start to the final stanza, George and Williams drained back-to-back triples, 61-54.  Purdue Northwest's Molly DeValkenaere attempted to close the gap with a layup and two free throws, 61-58.  The Warriors scored 10 points during a Pride scoring drought over the next two and a half minutes, 71-58.  DeValknaere broke the scoreless streak with a layup at 2:37, but Williams made a jump shot 23 seconds later, 73-60.  PNW's Shae Rhonehouse scored a bucket at 53 seconds followed by a triple by Nennig less than 10 seconds later, 74-65.  Williams shot the final two Warrior points from the charity stripe, 76-65.  Purdue Northwest's Lanie Allen ended the contest with a layup at one second, 76-67.

TEAM STATS
The Pride held a 45 percent (27-of-60) to 44 percent (28-of-63) edge in field goal shooting, but the Warriors were 9-of-19 (47 percent) from beyond the arc compared to 2-of-15 (20 percent) for Purdue Northwest.  WSU shot 73 percent (11-of-15) from the charity stripe, while PNW scored 10-of-14 (71 percent).  Wayne State had a 38-34 margin in rebounds, a 15-11 edge in assists and a 13-10 lead in steals.  The Pride led 14-0 in fast break points.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
George nearly had a double-double with a team-high of 22 points (including 4-of-6 triples) and eight rebounds.  Freshman Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) snagged a game-high 10 rebounds.  Chambers tallied 16 points, including 4-of-4 free throws.  Hawkins scored 15 points, while Villemure recorded 10 points.  Williams dished out a team-high four assists.

LEADING THE PRIDE
Nennig drained a game-high 33 points, while also grabbing five rebounds.  Vauters also scored in double digits with 10 points and dished out a game-high six assists.  Allen and DeValkenaere both snagged a team-high six rebounds.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will continue league play at Parkside on Saturday, Jan. 12, with tip-off scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
