Women's Basketball Drops Contest at Parkside

WSU outscored the Rangers, 33-12, in the final quarter.

KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (8-7 overall, 3-4 GLIAC) fell, 73-68, at Wisconsin-Parkside (4-9 overall, 2-5 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon.

After a back-and-fourth start to the first quarter, including three lead changes, the Warriors took the lead at 6:31 following a layup by junior guard Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep), 6-5.  For the next three and a half minutes, Wayne State scored six points while only allowing the Rangers to record two.  At 2:55, UWP's Georgie Eishold shot from beyond the arc to close the gap, 12-10.  But junior guard Alex Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) quickly responded with a triple, 15-10.  Parkside tallied the next four points before senior guard Ja'Nae Williams (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) made two free throws at 34 seconds, 17-14.  Ranger Ali Bettencourt made a last-second layup, followed by a point from the charity stripe to end the stanza, 17-17.

UWP took off in the second period, scoring 13 points in the first five minutes, while only allowing the Green and Gold to tally a free throw, 30-18.  Freshman Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) made the lone Warrior field goal in the second period at 4:46, but Bettencourt shot a three-pointer 30 seconds later.  Over the final four minutes of the second quarter, Parkside scored eight points (including two triples), with only two free throws from Wayne State.  The Rangers led 41-22 at the end of the half.  UWP outscored WSU 24-5 in the second quarter, with Wayne State only scoring one field goal in the final 12 minutes of the first half.

Parkside scored the first three points of the second half, but after a steal by senior guard India Hawkins (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy), freshman Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) was able to score a bucket followed by a triple 34 seconds later, 45-27.  Ranger Shelby Cheston made a layup and two free throws before sophomore Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.) scored her first two points of the game at 5:14, 49-29.  Over the next two and a half minutes, UWP scored four points and only allowed WSU one.  Williams scored two from the charity stripe, followed by a layup from Chambers 20 seconds later, 53-34.  Parkside outscored Wayne State, 8-1, in the final two minutes.  The Rangers finished the third quarter ahead, 61-35.

Hawkins made the first bucket in the final period after a steal, but Bettencourt responded with her own shot from the paint, 63-37.  Williams scored from the charity stripe at 8:52 before a layup by UWP.  The Warriors recorded the next six points, with a two minute scoring drought for Parkside.  Ranger Alyssa Nelson scored from beyond the arc, but WSU tallied another five points within 15 seconds.  The Warriors allowed two points for UWP at 5:19, but took off to score the next 19 points.  Even after outscoring Parkside 33-12 in the final period, Wayne State fell short 73-68.

TEAM STATS
WSU shot 40 percent (24-of-60) from the floor, compared to 50 percent (27-of-54) for the Rangers.  The Warriors were 16-of-23 (70 percent) from the charity stripe, with UWP making 11-of-15 (73 percent) free throw attempts.  Parkside had a 36-29 edge in rebounds, while Wayne State led 31-11 in fast break points and 36-32 in points in the paint.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Williams led the squad with a game-high of 19 points, including 9-of-13 free throws.  Chambers also scored in double digits with 13 points, while dishing out a team-best five assists.  Freshman Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and tallied 10 points. 

LEADING THE RANGERS
Bettencourt led the squad with a team-high of 18 points, including 3-of-5 triples.  Carolina Rahkonen recorded 15 points, while Cheston tallied 14 points.  Taylor Stephen snagged a game-best eight rebounds.
