Women's Basketball Tops Northwood, 69-60

WSU led the entire contest, with the largest lead being 21 points.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (9-8 overall, 4-5 GLIAC) notched a 69-60 victory over Northwood (7-10 overall, 4-5 GLIAC) at the Matthaei on Thursday night.

To begin the contest, WSU kept the Timberwolves from scoring in the first six minutes.  Brooke Ditto scored the first NU bucket at 3:52, but freshman Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) quickly responded with a layup (10-2).  Northwood's Adrianna Stolicker shot a triple shortly after junior Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep) made a jump shot.  The Timberwolves tallied the next two buckets from beyond the arc to close the gap to 12-11.  The Warriors scored the final three points of the quarter to lead 15-11.

At the top of the second stanza, Kenzie Seeley tallied five points for NU before 8:45, only allowing WSU to score two points.  Wayne State responded with seven points thanks to two freshman buckets by Sherwood and Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington), along with a three-pointer by senior Ja'Nae Williams (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King).  After a three-minute scoring drought for the Warriors and three points by Northwood, freshman Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) extended the lead from the paint at 4:02, 26-19.  WSU allowed two points before scoring the following six.  With 1:53 on the clock, Seeley made two from the charity stripe, but freshman Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) drained a triple to lead 35-23 at halftime.

Wayne State outscored NU 10-6 in the first 3:30 of the third quarter.  After 90 seconds without either squad scoring, both teams tallied points from beyond the arc followed by a layup each.  Northwood's Grace German made a layup at 1:42, but Williams responded with a bucket 30 seconds later, 52-36.  Miller scored a triple as the final Warrior points of the stanza, the Warriors leading 55-38.

WSU scored seven points in the beginning of the fourth period, while only allowing three.  The Timberwolves drained the next seven points, including a three-pointer by Hunter Viitala, 62-48.  Senior India Hawkins (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) shot from in the paint with 5:41 on the clock prior to a Wayne State scoring drought of just under five minutes.  NU scored only four points during that time.  During the final 52 seconds of the contest, Hawkins recorded 5-of-6 free throw attempts, while the Timberwolves tallied eight points (including two triples by Stolicker).  The Warriors claimed a 69-60 victory over Northwood.
