Women's Hoops Claims 50-48 Victory Over Saginaw Valley State

The Warriors had a 20-3 edge in bench scoring.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (10-8 overall, 5-5 GLIAC) claimed a 50-48 victory over visiting Saginaw Valley State (3-14 overall, 3-7 GLIAC) at the Matthaei on Saturday afternoon.

After falling behind 3-0, the Warriors tallied eight consecutive points which included triples by both freshman Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) and senior India Hawkins (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy).  Following a 2:30 scoring drought for WSU, junior Alex Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Catholic Central) and Hawkins both scored from beyond the arc to extend the lead to 14-6.  In an attempt to close the gap, the Cardinals scored the next four points.  However, junior Lyndsey Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Catholic Central) responded eight seconds later with a three pointer giving the hosts a 17-10 lead at the end the first quarter.

The Cardinals scored the first eight points of the second period to lead 18-17, but followed with a seven-minute scoring drought.  Meanwhile, WSU scored seven points including Hawkins' third triple of the half.  In the final 64 seconds before intermission, WSU had a 5-4 scoring advantage to lead 29-22 at halftime.

Freshman Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) had a conventional three-point play to start the third period scoring, but SVSU's Maddie Barrie drained two consecutive shots from beyond the arc to cut WSU's lead to four (32-28).  Hawkins made a fast-break layup, but Saginaw Valley pulled within three (34-31), before senior Paige Villemure (Flat Rock, Mich.) scored the final Warrior points of the quarter at the 5:06 mark.  The Cardinals recorded the final five points of the stanza to even the score at 36-36 after 30 minutes.

The game was tied at 38-38 just over 90 seconds into the final stanza, before the Wayne State tallied five of the next six points for a 43-39 advantage.  WSU lead stayed between two and four points for the next six points as the scoring was back-and-forth.  SVSU's Hannah Settingsgaard connected from long distance to make it a one-point game (49-48) with 60 seconds remaining.  Hawkins split a pair from the charity stripe in the final 15 seconds, and a last second shot by the Cardinals was not successful.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot just 27 percent (16-of-59) from the floor, but was 8-of-19 (42 percent) from beyond the arc.  SVSU made 30 percent (17-of-56) of its field goal tries, including 7-of-20 (35 percent) from three-point range.  WSU was 10-of-16 (63 percent) from the charity stripe, while the Cardinals were 7-of-12 (58 percent) on their free throw attempts.  The Warriors had a 46-40 edge in rebounding and led 20-3 in bench scoring.
