Chambers and Williams combine for 25 points.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (10-9 overall, 5-6 GLIAC) was upended 84-65 by fifth-ranked Ashland (18-1 overall, 10-1 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon at the Matthaei.

The Warriors fell behind 11-0 in the first 3:58 of the contest.  Senior Paige Villemure (Flat Rock, Mich.) scored the first two points for the Green and Gold at the 5:22 mark to cut the deficit to nine (11-2).  Less than a minute later, junior Alex Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) scored from beyond the arc.  Over the next two minutes, WSU only allowed one point while tallying five points to pull within four (14-10).  The Eagles outscored Wayne State 6-2 in the final 2:17 of the opening stanza to lead 20-12 after 10 minutes.

The Warriors recorded the first four points of the second period, with layups by senior Ja'Nae Williams (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) and junior Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep).  Ashland's Jodi Johnson scored a bucket, but Chambers responded 24 seconds later with her own shot from the paint.  Senior India Hawkins (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) drained a three-pointer cutting the AU lead to three (24-21).  Over the next 4:28, AU scored 14 of the next 15 points for a 38-22 lead with just two minutes remaining before intermission.  WSU recorded the next four points before a last second bucket by Johnson, which gave the Eagles a 40-26 advantage at halftime.

AU's Karlee Pireu scored the first five points of the third quarter, before the Warriors went on an 11-2 run over the next 2:15.  Williams started the spurt with a triple and also added a fast-break layup.  In a back-and-forth two minutes, Ashland scored nine points while allowing four for the Green and Gold (56-41).  Over the final 2:38 of the third period, each team scored seven points giving the visitors a 63-48 lead heading into the final stanza.  Freshman Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) had a basket, while Chambers added a pair of free throws before a three-point shot by Alex Matus late in the quarter.

In the first 1:26 of the final period, AU outscored Wayne State 8-2.  Junior Sadia Johnson (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Central) drained a triple at the 5:47 mark to cut the Warrior deficit to 18 (73-55), which would be as close as they would get the rest of the game.  Junior Lyndsey Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) drained a three-pointer on WSU's final possession to complete the scoring.
