Women's Basketball Falls to Northern Michigan

Warriors upended 69-56 by NMU.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (7-6 overall, 2-3 GLIAC) suffered a 69-56 setback at home against the Northern Michigan Wildcats (10-3 overall, 5-0 GLIAC) Thursday evening at the Matthaei ending a three-game winning streak.

In a back-and-forth first stanza, there were four ties with the largest lead being four points (8-4 by NMU at the 4:54 mark).  Freshman guard Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) made the first triple of the night giving WSU an 11-10 lead with 2:46 on the clock.  The Wildcats ended the opening period on a 5-2 run to lead 15-13 after 10 minutes.  Senior guard Ja'Nae Williams (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) led the Warriors with eight points in the first quarter, including 4-of-4 at the charity stripe.

Freshman Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) immediately tied the score, 15-15, at the start of the second period.  There would be another three ties throughout the quarter, including 25-25 at intermission.  Northern Michigan had the largest lead of the stanza (25-22) following a layup by Darby Youngstrom, before junior Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep) drained a three pointer in the final 65 seconds to knot the score.  She led Wayne State with five points in the second quarter.

In the decisive third quarter, NMU outscored WSU 28-17.  Miller had a steal and fast break layup to give the Warriors their final advantage of the game (32-31) just 3:20 into the second half.  After Williams connected from long range to tie the game at 40-40, the Wildcats tallied the next 11 points before Miller made two free throws ending a 2:48 scoreless drought.  Wayne State went 0-for-6 from the floor, plus missed both foul shots as Northern Michigan pulled away.

Northern Michigan led the entire fourth quarter.  Junior Alex Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) scored the first four Warrior points to cut the deficit to nine (55-46), the closest WSU would get the rest of the way.  The Wildcats tallied the next seven points.
