Women's Hoops Drops 62-46 Contest To Visiting Michigan Tech

Warriors held to just 28 percent shooting.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (7-7 overall, 2-4 GLIAC) fell, 62-46, to visiting Michigan Tech University (8-6 overall, 4-2 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon at the Matthaei.

In a close first quarter, the largest lead was five points by WSU (11-6) at 1:31 mark.  The Huskies never trailed in the first six minutes, until freshman guard Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) scored a jumper and subsequent free throw at the 3:42 mark giving the Warriors an 8-6 lead.  MTU tallied the final three points of the stanza after freshman Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) had made three foul shots to cut the Wayne State advantage to two (11-9) after 10 minutes.  Senior guard Ja'Nae Williams (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) led the Warriors in the first period with five points and three rebounds.

Michigan Tech's Ellie Welsh drained a triple 99 seconds into the second quarter to put the visitors ahead 12-11.  After the teams traded buckets, the Huskies went on an 8-0 run to take a 22-13 lead with just over four minutes left in the first half.  Senior India Hawkins (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) connected from beyond the arc, WSU's only triple of the game, to trim the Warrior deficit to six (22-16), but MTU answered with back-to-back triples by Ellie Mackay and Welsh.  Layups by freshman Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) and Hawkins pulled Wayne State within eight (28-20) with 1:37 remaining, but MTU hit two more three pointers to conclude the first half.  The Huskies were 5-of-8 from three-point range in the second quarter to outscore the Warriors 25-9 and take a 34-20 lead at intermission.

Michigan Tech scored the first six points of the third period for a 20-point advantage (40-20).  Over the final 7:20 on the third quarter, WSU had a 11-10 scoring edge with Williams leading the way with four points.

Junior Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep) and Williams scored the first two baskets of the fourth quarter, and senior Jessica Murphy (Oxford, Mich.) came cold off the bench to make a free throw after Williams was injured to complete a 5-0 run.  The 14-point deficit (50-36) would be as close as the Warriors would get over the final eight minutes.
