37 Football Student-Athletes Receive Academic All-GLIAC Accolades

WSU has a school-record 19 football student-athletes on the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team.

Corey Ester was one of a school-record 19 football student-athletes to earn GLIAC All-Academic Excellence honors.
BAY CITY, Mich. -- Thirty-seven (37) members of the Wayne State University football team were recognized with GLIAC All-Academic accolades for having a cumulative grade-point average of at least a 3.0 following the Fall 2018 semester.  In addition, a school-record 19 football student-athletes were named to the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence squad for maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5.

This is the fourth straight year the Warrior football team had at least 34 players earn Academic All-GLIAC recognition, and the 37 honorees is the second-most in school history behind the 39 in 2016.

Criteria states the student-athlete must be an active member on the roster at the end of the season, not a freshman or a first-year transfer student.

The 19 Warriors earning GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team honors (cumulative GPA 3.5+) were redshirt sophomore Jake AmRhein (South Elgin, Ill.), redshirt freshman Chris Carter (Lancaster, Ohio / Columbus Bishop Watterson), redshirt junior Stephen Charron (Palm Harbor, Fla.), redshirt senior Drew Dowding (Michigan Center, Mich.), graduate student Corey Ester (Lake Orion, Mich.), graduate student Randy Garvin (Belmont, Mich. / Rockford), graduate student Paul Graham (Commerce Twp., Mich. / Orchard Lake St. Mary's), redshirt junior Shane Holler (Waterford, Mich. / Clarkston), redshirt freshman Cooper Kukal (Fremont, Mich.), sophomore Taylor McCarty (Oxford, Mich. / Lake Orion), sophomore Lane Potter (Hudsonville, Mich.), redshirt sophomore Justin Rau (Flushing, Mich.), redshirt freshman Ian Sharp (Salem, Ohio / West Branch), redshirt senior Logan Smith (Norton Shores, Mich. / Mona Shores), redshirt junior Ryan Smith (Warren, Mich. / De La Salle),  redshirt freshman Spencer Stephenson (Midland, Mich. / Dow), redshirt freshman Reid Thompson (Fenton, Mich.), redshirt junior Kyle Toth (Hudsonville, Mich.), and redshirt junior Charlie Younger (Eagle, Wis. / Mukwonago).

The 18 football student-athletes named to the GLIAC All-Academic Team (cumulative GPA 3.0-3.49) were redshirt junior Brady Beedon (Marysville, Mich.), junior Luke Bevilacqua (Lake Orion, Mich.), redshirt junior Andy Bielecki (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Lutheran North), redshirt freshman Will Butler (Novi, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central), redshirt junior Leon Eggleston (Sylvania, Ohio / Southview), redshirt sophomore Steven Glenn (Lincoln Park, Mich.), redshirt junior Luke Ketterman (Maumee, Ohio / Toledo St. Francis de Sales), redshirt junior Christian Klink (Olmsted Falls, Ohio / Parma Heights Holy Name), redshirt freshman Donte McClure (Port Clinton, Ohio), redshirt junior Greg McDade (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson), redshirt junior DeOntay Moffett (Muskegon Heights, Mich. / Mona Shores), redshirt senior Deiontae Nicholas (Chesterfield, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse North), graduate student Preston Pelham (Tecumseh, Mich.), redshirt freshman Nick Poterack (Byron Center, Mich.), redshirt senior Anthony Pittman (Birmingham, Mich. / Groves), junior Darece Roberson, Jr. (Muskegon, Mich. / Mona Shores), redshirt junior Terry Sanders (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson), and senior Samson Tai (Newark, Calif. / Newark Memorial).

Graham collected his fifth career All-Academic award.

Dowding, Garvin, Nicholas, Pelham, and Logan Smith were recognized for the fourth time in their careers.

Beedon, Bielecki, Charron, Eggleston, Ester, Holler, Ketterman, Klink, McDade, Moffett, Ryan Smith, Toth and Younger received their third consecutive GLIAC All-Academic recognition.

AmRhein, Bevilacqua, Glenn, Pittman, Rau, Roberson, and Sanders were honored for the second straight season.

Earning the award for the first time were Butler, Carter, Kukal, McCarty, McClure, Poterack, Potter, Sharp, Stephenson, Tai and Thompson.
