Men's Swim and Dive Squad Upends Grand Valley State

The No. 8 Warriors upset the No. 3 Lakers.

Junior Sasha Palazzo earned four victories while breaking three pool records.
ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The No. 8 Wayne State University men's swimming and diving squad won its meet, 152-142, at No. 3 Grand Valley State on Saturday.

QUALIFYING STANDARDS

Junior Sasha Palazzo (Verona, Italy) broke the GVSU pool record for the 100 breast (54.89), earning a B Standard qualification (55.56).  Palazzo also finished first in the 100 free (45.88).

INDIVIDUAL RESULTS

Senior Dima Drobnych (Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine) notched victories in the 100 back (50.66) and the 200 back (1:51.88).

Senior Rasmus Olsen (Kastrup, Denmark) attained first-place finishes in the 200 fly (1:54.72) and the 100 fly (50.03).

Redshirt junior Ahmed Ahmed (Alexandria, Egypt) claimed the top spot in the 200 free (1:44.05).

Junior Ryan Katulski (Novi, Mich.) finished first in the 50 free with a time of 21.05.

Freshman Grant Porter (Haslett, Mich.) won the three-meter dive with a score of 204.01.

Junior Joao Martimbianco Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) notched a victory in the 200 IM (1:54.06).

RELAY RESULTS

WSU broke the Laker pool record for the 400 medley relay (3:20.16).  The winning quartet included Drobnych, Palazzo, Olsen, and Katulski.

The Green and Gold also broke the Grand Valley State pool record for the 400 free relay (3:04.70).  The first-place group consisted of Palazzo, Mueller, Katulski, and Drobnych.

"The men pulled off quite a big upset, as our opponent today was ranked third in the country.  We were victorious in 12-of-16 events and really performed at a high level.  They are all working very hard and, overall, the Warriors had a good day and walked away with a very big win."

UP NEXT

Wayne State will travel to Saginaw Valley State on Friday, Jan. 11, to face the Cardinals at 5:00 p.m.
