LIMA, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's tennis squad competed at the Northwestern Ohio Racer Invitational over the weekend, with four WSU players winning matches in the finals.
A DOUBLES RESULTS
Senior
Pierre Renaudie (Sathonay-Camp, France) and freshman
Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) swept Clemens Wagner and Filipp Kulynych from Walsh in the first round (6-0). The duo dropped their semifinals match 6-4 to Hillsdale's Ivanhoe Lissanevitch and Charlie Adams.
Junior
Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, Germany) and freshman
Dom Spicer (London, United Kingdom) fell 6-4 in the quarterfinals to Tiffin's Hugo Chatras and Gabe Oliveira.
Karcz and Renaudie partnered for the consolation final, winning 6-4 versus Northwestern Ohio's Lars Kaplusch and Diogo Lamy.
Laws and Spicer joined forces to take down Filipp Kulynych and Clemens Wagner from Walsh, 6-2, in the consolation final.
B DOUBLES RESULTS
Sophomores
Max Rink (Wetzlar, Germany) andÂ
Donovan Nguyen (Troy, Mich. / Utica) lost 7-5 in a close first-round match against Hillsdale's Tyler Conrad and Gabriel Katz. The pair won their quarterfinal consolation match 6-4 vs. Guilherme Carneiro and Dawson Drummond.
Rink partnered with freshman
Ryan Okonski (Stevensville, Mich. / St. Joseph) to tally a 6-2 win in the consolation final versus Lawrence Tech's Lukas Obel and Nicolas Damotta.
A SINGLES RESULTS
Karcz nearly blanked Lawrence Tech's Alex Tamarro in the first round (6-1, 6-0). He moved on to win his semifinals match versus Ivanhoe Lissanevitch from Hillsdale (6-1, 6-4). Karcz earned the A Singles Champion title after tallying a tight win against Northwestern Ohio's Marcos Salazar in the finals (7-5, 6-4).
Rink notched a victory over Charlie Adams from Hillsdale in the quarterfinals (6-1, 6-4). He advanced to the semifinals to tally a super-tiebreak win vs. Northwestern Ohio's Marcos Salazar (4-6, 6-4, 10-5).
B SINGLES RESULTS
Spicer edged Walsh's Clemens Wagner in the first round (6-1, 6-3). In the semifinals, he claimed a victory against David Ayguavives from Northwestern Ohio (6-3, 6-4). Spicer was named B Singles Champion after winning his finals match vs. Northwestern Ohio's Lars Kaplusch (6-2, 6-4).
In the quarterfinals, Renaudie fell in a super tiebreaker to Hugo Chatras from Tiffin (4-6, 6-2, 10-2). He notched a super-tiebreak victory over Hilldale's Tyler Conrad in the consolation round (3-6, 7-5, 10-6), before sweeping Clemens Wagner from Walsh in the consolation finals (6-0, 6-0).
C SINGLES RESULTS
Nguyen topped Northwestern Ohio's Alex De Vilar in the first round (6-4, 7-5). In the semifinals, he edged Alex Medina Puigmarti from Walsh after a first-set tibreaker (7-6(5), 6-1). Nguyen tallied a super-tiebreak win in the finals against Walsh's Filipp Kulynych (3-6, 6-3, 10-7).
Laws notched a quarterfinals victory over Gabe Oliveira from Tiffin (6-3, 6-2). He advanced to the semifinals, tallying a win against Walsh's Filipp Kulynych (6-3, 6-1). Laws won his finals match in a second-set tiebreaker versus Alex Medina Puigmarti from Walsh (6-1, 7-6(6)).
E SINGLES RESULTS
Okonski fell in a super tiebreaker to Lawrence Tech's Lukas Obel in the first round (6-4, 2-6, 10-5). In the first round of consolation matches, the freshman Warrior blanked Benjamin Szarek from Tiffin (6-0, 6-0). Okonski won his consolation final match vs. Tiffin's Timothy RIchardson (6-2, 6-0).
