Women's Basketball Extends Winning Streak

WSU tallied a 75-63 win against Tiffin on Tuesday night.

DETROIT, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (5-1 overall) extended its winning streak to five games as it notched a 75-63 victory over Tiffin University (3-5 overall) Tuesday night at the Matthaei.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Sophomore forward Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) came out of the gates strong, giving WSU a 7-0 lead in the initial 2:26 as she knocked down a triple and a pair of jumpers form the paint.  Over the remainder of the first period, Wayne State outscored the Dragons 14-8 to lead 21-8 after the opening stanza.  Senior Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep) and junior Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.) each contributed four points, while senior Alex Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) drained a basket from long distance.

The Warriors were outscored 8-2 in the first 2:14 of the second quarter, cutting the Green and Gold lead to seven points.  The Green and Gold points came on a pair of free throws by redshirt junior Ariel Bethea (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron).  A jump shot by Perez and a triple from Chambers would extend the lead to 12 points (32-20) with 4:38 remaining before intermission.  Senior guard Sadia Johnson (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Central) scored the final five WSU points of the half with the Warriors leading 39-28 at halftime.

Sophomore forward Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) opened the second half with four consecutive points from the foul line.  During a 2:23 scoring drought for the Green and Gold, Tiffin recorded seven points to pull within eight at 43-35.  Cherney snapped the Dragon run with a layup at the 6:39 mark, and after a TU basket, the Warriors went on an 11-0 rally over the next 3:17, extending the lead to 56-37.  Wayne State allowed eight points in the final 2:01 of the third stanza, with the lone WSU point being a free throw from George.  The Warriors led 57-45 heading into the final period.

Wayne State led by 16 (62-46) following a layup by sophomore guard Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) with 6:26 left.  The Dragons staged a comeback outscoring the hosts 11-1 over the next 2:19, cutting the WSU margin to six (63-57).  A jumper by Chambers ignited an 11-0 spurt by the Warriors.  Chambers had a conventional three-point play, followed by back-to-back jumpers from Perez and Miller, while Perez ended the run with a pair of foul shots.  Tiffin ended the game on a 6-1 run.

A WORD FROM COACH LOHR
"Tiffin made a strong run and got us on our heels," commented head coach Carrie Lohr.  "I was glad that we were able to get some stops to seal the deal.  When we are dialed in, playing as one, and defense-oriented, I think we could be a really dangerous team.  But we learned from this game that consistency is paramount.  Nastassja did a great job of taking big shots for us.  She was definitely the catalyst that pushed us through, not only to get the lead, but to help us get the win.  Those are the shots and the situations where her experience, her ability and her maturity are showing.  She gives confidence to her teammates when they are seeing her like that.  I am so excited about the balance that I am seeing within our players; it makes for a really strong team."

UP NEXT
The Warriors will travel to Ferris State on Thursday, Dec. 5th for a 7:30 p.m. contest to begin GLIAC play.
