Women's Basketball Tops Ferris State in GLIAC Opener

WSU edged the Bulldogs, 78-75, in the first conference matchup of the season.

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (6-1 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) notched a 78-75 victory at Ferris State (5-2 overall, 0-1 GLIAC) in the conference opener on Thursday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Over the first 4:41 of the contest, there were five lead changes before a 2:23 scoring drought from both teams.  Sophomore Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) regained the Warrior lead at 2:56 with a layup and a free throw (11-9).  The lead shifted back to FSU, however, with four Bulldog points from the foul line.  A jumper by senior Sadia Johnson (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Central) tied the game at 13-13 with 2:09 left on the clock, but Ferris State responded with a long-distance basket.  Wayne State scored the next five points (18-16) before FSU tied the game at the end of the stanza.

The Warriors were outscored 17-10 in the initial 5:25 of the second period (35-28).  After an eight-point spurt by the Green and Gold to take a 36-35 advantage, the Bulldogs took back the lead for the remainder of the first half.  Johnson drained a triple to end the second stanza cutting the deficit for WSU to six points (47-41).

FSU scored a basket from beyond the arc to open the second half, but Johnson responded with a layup and a point from the foul line to pull the Warriors within five (49-44).  Ferris State would drain another triple before a 15-0 run over the next 3:22 by WSU to lead 59-52.  Senior Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep) scored seven points for the Green and Gold during that time, along with four points by George.  The Bulldogs outscored WSU 11-4 over the remaining 3:51, however, Wayne State continued to lead 66-63 at the end of the third quarter.

The Warriors lost their lead after a six-point FSU spurt over the first 2:56 of the final stanza (69-66).  George made a layup at the 6:45 mark to cut the Bulldog lead to one point, but Ferris State made two free throws (71-68).  Johnson drained a triple to tie the game at 71-71 with 4:47 left, then followed by a fast-break layup 23 seconds later.  The next two points for both teams came from the charity stripe (75-73).  With one minute left of the clock, FSU tied the score, 75-75.  A bucket by Chambers and a free throw from George sealed the deal for the Warriors in the final 38 seconds (78-75).

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 45 percent (26-of-58) from the floor, while FSU shot 39 percent (26-of-66) from the field.  The Warriors connected on 21-of-27 (78 percent) free throw attempts, while the Bulldogs made 16-of-18 (89 percent) from the charity stripe.  The Green and Gold held a 41-31 edge in rebounds.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Johnson scored a game-best 24 points, including 8-of-9 on free throw attempts.  George notched her second collegiate double-double with 18 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.  Chambers and sophomore Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) also scored in double figures with 13 points and 10 points, respectively.  Johnson and Cherney each dished out three assists, while Cherney blocked a game-best five shots.

LEADING THE BULLDOGS
Adrienne Anderson recorded a team-high 18 points.  Riley Blair (15), Mallory McCartney (13) and Shaniya Huggins (12) also scored in double digits.  In addition, Huggins dished out a team-high eight assists, while Blair tallied a game-best eight steals.  Brayene Benner grabbed a team-high six boards.

The Warriors will travel to Lake Superior State for a 1:00 p.m. league matchup on Saturday.
