Women's Basketball Wins At Lake Erie

George records double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Wayne State University women's basketball team (1-1 overall) concluded its opening weekend of the season with a come-from-behind 62-55 win at Lake Erie College (0-2 overall) on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Warriors never led early on, but tied the game twice (at 5-5 and 7-7), the latter deadlock coming on a bucket by senior Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep), which ignited an 11-6 run by the Warriors to end the opening stanza.  WSU's first four points came on a pair of field goals by sophomore Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington), while senior Sadia Johnson (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Central) made four free throws.

The host Storm scored 11 of the first 13 points of the second period to grab a 24-18 lead with just under a minute remaining before intermission.  A basket by junior Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.) preceded a triple by LEC giving the hosts a 27-20 advantage at halftime.

A conventional three-point play by freshman Rebecca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) started the second half scoring.  Sophomore Kate Sherwood's (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) field goal followed a pair of Storm free throws to keep the deficit at four points.  A 7-2 spurt by Lake Erie increased their margin to nine points at 36-27 with just over five minutes remaining in the third quarter.  Five straight points by Perez pulled the Warriors within four (36-32).  After two foul shots by LEC, Fugate drained a three pointer before the Storm answered with their own triple.

Wayne State entered the final period trailing by six (41-35), but sophomore Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) made a layup on the opening possession before the teams traded buckets.  Another basket by Chambers made it a two-point game (43-41) before a layup from junior Ariel Bethea (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) knotted the game at 43-43.  Chambers and Bethea each answered Storm buckets with one of their own.  Another field goal by Bethea put the Warriors in front 49-47, before George extended the lead to four (51-47) with 2:49 left.

George had a pair of baskets sandwiched around a Lake Erie hoop giving WSU a 55-49 advantage with 1:44 remaining.  Four consecutive points by the Storm cut the Warrior lead to two (55-53) with 35 seconds left.  George then sealed the victory with four foul shots in a span of 11 seconds which made it 59-53.
