Women's Basketball Edges Cedarville, 75-72, in Final Contest of 2019

Johnson and George combine for 45 points.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (7-4 overall) ended its three-game losing streak by defeating visiting Cedarville University (10-3 overall), 75-72, at home on Saturday afternoon in its final game before winter break.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Warriors went on a 9-0 spurt to open the contest, including four points by senior Sadia Johnson (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Central), a triple from classmate Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep) and two foul shots by sophomore Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.).  CU scored two points, but sophomore Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) responded with a basket from beyond the arc at the 5:51 mark to give the Warriors a 10-point advantage (12-2).  WSU allowed another bucket before Johnson drained a three pointer with 4:34 left in the quarter to extend the lead to 11 (15-4).  Trailing 19-8 with two minutes left in the stanza, Cedarville went on a seven-point run to pull within four (19-15).  Freshman Mercedes Wagner (Sherwood, Ohio / Fairview) made a layup to complete the first period scoring.

Johnson made the first basket for WSU in the second quarter after the Warriors allowed a conventional three-point play to CU's Emily Chapman.  A basket by Yellow Jacket Isabelle Bolendar ended a 2:20 scoring drought for both teams with a jumper, and cut the WSU margin to three (23-20).  The Warriors recorded the next five points, including an old-fashioned three-point play from sophomore Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington).  The Yellow Jackets scored a jumper, but senior Lyndsey Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) made a long distance bucket with 5:20 left in the clock to push the lead to nine (31-22).

After six consecutive points by Cedarville, Matus connected from long distance giving the Warriors a 34-28 lead.  WSU would score five points the rest of the first half, while the Yellow Jackets made seven field goals to lead 42-39 at intermission.

Cedarville continued its offensive outburst by scoring the first five points of the third quarter to lead 47-39 just 70 seconds into the frame.  A jumper in the paint by George capped off an 8-3 run by Wayne State to pull within one (52-51) at the mid-point of the period.  After a 5-0 run by CU, the Warrior defense only allowed one made field goal in the final four minutes, while the WSU offense tallied 13 points, including six by Johnson and five by George, to lead 64-59 after 30 minutes.

CU's Abby Wolford scored the first four points of the final quarter to make it a one-point game (64-63).  Wayne State answered with George scoring the game's next seven points before a layup by Cherney gave the Warriors a 10-point advantage (73-63) with 4:06 left.  Wolford then hit back-to-back triples in a 30-second span to pull the Yellow Jackets within five (74-69), before Johnson split a pair at the charity stripe.  Bolender then connected from long range with two minutes remaining to make it a two-point contest (74-72).

Over the next 1:50, WSU went 0-for-1 from the floor with two turnovers, while Cedarville was 0-for-2 from three-point range with one turnover.  Chambers made the second of two foul shots with 6.4 seconds left to make it a three-point contest (75-72) and a triple try by Chapman with just two seconds remaining was off the mark.
