HOUGHTON, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (7-5 overall, 1-3 GLIAC) fell, 69-55, at Michigan Tech (5-6 overall, 3-1 GLIAC) on Thursday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
WSU was outscored, 8-6, in the initial 3:15 of the game, with senior Sadia Johnson (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Central) contributing four points.  A layup and a free throw from sophomore Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) gave the Warriors a 9-8 lead at the 5:48 mark, the final Green and Gold lead of the quarter.  Sophomore Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) was the only Wayne State player to score over the remaining 5:47 of the stanza with a point from the charity stripe.  The Warriors trailed, 16-10, at the end of the first period.

Senior Alex Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) opened the second quarter with a bucket from long distance.  Classmate Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep) made a layup 30 seconds later, cutting the MTU lead to one point (16-15).  Michigan Tech scored the next five points, but WSU went on an eight-point spurt to regain the lead (23-21), which included a triple by both Johnson and Alex Matus.  A Huskie layup tied the game once again, but Johnson drained a deep three pointer giving the Warriors a 26-23 advantage.  Wayne State was outscored 8-4 over the remaining 4:59, with George tallying all four Warrior points.  After outscoring the Huskies 20-15 in the second quarter, WSU only trailed by one point at the half (31-30).  Alex Matus, Johnson, and George each scored six points in the second stanza.

After allowing a Michigan Tech layup to start the second half, the Warriors scored six consecutive points to earn a three-point lead (36-33).  Johnson's bucket from beyond the arc to give WSU its final lead in the game (39-36).  The Huskies went on a 10-0 run to lead 46-39.  Alex Matus responded by tallying her third triple of the game, ending the 5:07 scoring drought for Wayne State.  The Warriors allowed the Huskies to score the final four points of the third period and trailed 50-42 after 30 minutes.

MTU opened the final quarter on an eight-point run, which gave the Huskies a 16-point lead (58-42).  Cherney was the first Warrior to score with 7:01 on the clock.  Michigan Tech made a layup, but junior Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.) responded with her own at the 6:21 mark.  Neither team made a field goal over the next 3:16, however, MTU scored four points from the foul line for a 64-46 lead.  George ended Michigan Tech's nine-point spurt with two points from the charity stripe, followed by a layup with 1:18 on the clock.  A long distance bucket from senior Lyndsey Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic), followed by a layup by junior Kara Wilson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) concluded the contest, but it wasn't enough for the Warriors.
