Poor Shooting Dooms Warriors In 48-34 Setback at LSSU

Wayne State shot just 20 percent from the floor.

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (6-2 overall, 1-1 GLIAC), which was off to its best start since the 2014-15 team began the year with a 14-1 record, struggled offensively the entire game in falling 48-34 at Lake Superior State University (4-3 overall, 1-1 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Warriors were just 1-of-10 from the floor in the opening stanza, along with four turnovers to trail 9-2 after one period of play.  Both teams were scoreless until sophomore Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) scored on a feed from classmate Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) for the game's first points with 4:52 elapsed in the contest.

Senior guard Alex Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) drained a triple 64 seconds into the second quarter to end the Lakers 9-0 run.  Junior Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.) scored on a pass from George to make it a two-point game at 9-7.  Two consecutive baskets by LSSU's Lexie Khon preceded a layup by WSU's Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville).  Lake Superior scored eight of the final 11 points before intermission to lead 21-12 at halftime.

The teams traded scores the entire third period with each squad scoring 14 points in the stanza.  Both teams made six field goals in the quarter.

After a layup by junior Ariel Bethea (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) cut the Warrior deficit to seven (35-28), Mattison Rayman had back-to-back buckets for the Lakers to extend their lead to 11 (39-28).  Sophomore Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) connected from beyond the arc, and after a pair of LSSU free throws, Cherney scored to pull Wayne State within eight (41-33) with just over three minutes remaining, but that would be WSU's last made field goal.

The 34 points is the lowest output by Wayne State since falling at Eastern Michigan, 82-31, in the 2004-05 season opener on Nov. 19, 2004.
