Women's Basketball Rally At SVSU Comes Up Short In 69-64 Setback

Chambers leads three Warriors in double figures with 14 points.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – With a chance to secure a playoff berth with a victory, the Wayne State University women's basketball squad (13-13 overall, 8-10 GLIAC) will now have to wait until Saturday after falling 69-64 at Saginaw Valley State University (6-19 overall, 6-12 GLIAC) Thursday evening.

After an explosive first quarter which saw 56 points (SVSU leading 30-26), the next two periods combined only had 48 points scored.

The Warriors fell behind 11-2 in the first two minutes as the Cardinals connected on three triples.  The teams traded buckets for the next three minutes until freshman Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) drained a three-pointer and junior Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep) followed with her own triple to make it a one-point game (15-14) in favor of the hosts.

A triple by senior Ja'Nae Williams (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) at the 1:45 mark knotted the score at 19-19.  SVSU made three more shots from beyond the arc in the final 90 seconds of the opening stanza for the aforementioned 30-26 lead after 10 minutes.

The teams exchanged baskets for most of the second quarter until Cardinal Ashley Buchholz scored five of the final seven points before intermission giving Saginaw Valley a 42-34 lead at the break.

WSU scored the first five points of the third quarter on a layup by freshman Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) and a three-pointer by senior India Hawkins (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy).  An 8-0 run by SVSU pushed their advantage to 11 (50-39) just before the mid-point of the period.

Back-to-back triples by the Cardinals gave the hosts their largest lead of the game at 58-43.

The Warriors scored the last three points of the third quarter and the first five points of the fourth quarter to trim their deficit to seven (58-51) with just under eight minutes remaining.  Over the next five minutes each team scored seven points until junior Alex Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) connected from long range to pull WSU within four (65-61).

After a bucket for each team, Matus split a pair from the charity stripe to make it a three-point game (67-64) with 69 seconds remaining.  However, that would be WSU's last point as the Warriors went 0-for-3 from the floor in the final 15 seconds.
