Women's Basketball Falls In Overtime At Northwood

Five Warriors score in double figures

MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (13-14 overall, 8-11 GLIAC) suffered a 78-72 setback in overtime at Northwood University (12-15 overall, 9-10 GLIAC) Saturday evening.  Despite the loss, the Warriors qualified for the GLIAC Tournament as Saginaw Valley State lost at home to Ashland.

The game was tied twice early (2-2, 4-4) before WSU managed just two points in a five-minute stretch to fall behind 14-6.  The squads traded points over the final minutes with the host leading 18-10 after the first period.

Wayne State trailed by 11 (23-12) before senior Ja'Nae Williams (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) tallied five consecutive points to cut the Warrior deficit to six (23-17).  Back-to-back layups from sophomore Chavon Tiggs (Flint, Mich. / Dearborn Heights Robichaud) pulled WSU within four (25-21) with just over four minutes remaining in the first half.  Wayne State was down 30-25 at intermission.

A triple by junior Alex Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) and a jumper by freshman Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) knotted the game at 30-30.  After an NU free throw, Miller connected from long range giving WSU a 33-31 advantage, its first lead of the game.  Northwood tied the game at 33-33, but the Warriors responded with two foul shots from Williams and a bucket from Tiggs for a 37-33 lead.

Another triple from Miller pushed the lead to 42-38, but the Timberwolves answered with an 11-6 run to grab a 49-48 lead, which is where the third quarter ended.

A free throw from Miller and a jumper by junior Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep) tied the game at 51-51.  The game was tied five times just in the first eight minutes of the fourth period before a Tiggs bucket with 1:52 left put WSU ahead 63-61.  NU's bucket with 1:11 remaining would be the final points of regulation.

The Timberwolves scored the first seven points of overtime before a triple by Matus made it 70-66 with 2:11 left in the extra session.  Northwood scored eight of the final 14 points for the 78-72 victory.
