Women's Hoops Falls 94-53 at Seventh-Ranked Ashland

The Warriors will play at Grand Valley State in the GLIAC Quarterfinals on March 5.

ASHLAND, Ohio -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (13-15 overall, 8-12 GLIAC) was upended, 94-53, at seventh-ranked Ashland University (26-2, 18-2 GLIAC) on Thursday night in the final contest of the regular season.

In the first 3:15 of the contest, the Warriors outscored Ashland, 6-3, including a triple by freshman Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.).  Over the next 1:41, the Eagles would take the lead after tallying seven points.  Junior Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep) made a jump shot at the 4:41 mark before a 3:45 scoring drought for the Green and Gold.  During that time, AU went on an eight-point run to lead 18-8.  Chambers and senior Ja'Nae Williams (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) each scored a bucket in the final minute of the first quarter.  WSU trailed by 11 points (23-12) after the first stanza.

In the first 2:29 of the second period, Wayne State's solo points came from two free throws, while Ashland scored four points.  Freshman Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) made the first basket of the quarter with 6:32 on the clock, but Eagle Maddie Dackin scored back-to-back layups shortly after.  Williams was the next to score for the Warriors at the 5:36 mark.  Over the final 5:30 of the first half, WSU was outscored 16-7, with six of the Wayne State points coming from Chambers.  AU led 45-27 at intermission.

Chambers and Williams each scored two points in the first 1:27 of the third period, before a 21-6 run for the Eagles over the next 7:22.  The Warriors tallied three free throws in the last minute, while AU scored four points to hold a 76-38 advantage after three quarters.

Over the first 5:28 of the final stanza, the Green and Gold recorded four points while Ashland scored nine points.  AU had its biggest lead of 43 points (85-42) at the 4:32 mark.  WSU tallied the next four points, followed by an Eagle layup.  Wayne State scored seven points in the final 1:47, including a shot from long distance by junior Alex Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic).  The Warriors fell 94-53 to Ashland.

TEAM STATS
WSU shot 33 percent (19-of-57) from the floor, while AU was 36-of-75 (48 percent).  Wayne State connected on 13-of-22 (59 percent) free throw attempts, while the Eagles were 11-of-12 (92 percent) from the charity stripe.  The Warriors trailed 52-30 in rebounds.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Chambers scored a team-high 14 points, while Williams also tallied in double digits (11).  Williams and Cherney tied for the team lead in rebounds, grabbing seven each.  Sophomore Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.) went 4-of-6 from the foul line, tallying eight points for the Green and Gold.

LEADING THE EAGLES
Jodi Johnson recorded a game-best 19 points, while Sara Loomis snagged a game-high 14 boards.  Loomis (15), Dackin (15), Brooke Smith (12), and Karlee Pireu (10) all scored in double figures.  Renee Stimpert dished out a game-best 10 assists.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will travel to Grand Valley State on Tuesday, March 5, to face the Lakers in the GLIAC Quarterfinals.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
